Job summary

Brighton & Hove City Council is seeking a Highway Inspector to inspect and monitor the public highway, ensuring safety for all users. You will identify defects, arrange repairs and monitor contractor works while coordinating with utilities and residents.

The role includes handling maintenance complaints, assessing risks and supporting emergency responses, with progression to winter maintenance and complex schemes for higher grade.

Qualifications

• Experience in highways maintenance, street works or engineering environments.
• Strong communication with public, contractors and stakeholders.
• Ability to prioritise, decide and work independently.
• Good IT, record-keeping and report-writing skills.
• Knowledge of highways legislation (Highways Act, NRSWA, Traffic Management Act).
• Detail-oriented approach when assessing defects and gathering evidence.
• Commitment to delivering excellent public services and safety.
