You'll join an established highways team working on a varied portfolio of major highway, infrastructure, development and transport projects across the UK and Ireland.
The role would suit a Highway Engineer with @3-6 years experience who wants to broaden their project exposure beyond local authority frameworks and work directly with major contractors, developers and private-sector clients on design-and-build schemes.
You'll be involved in highway design, technical reporting, client liaison, site work and project delivery, with increasing responsibility as your experience develops. There is also the opportunity to gain experience in client management, commercial delivery and business development, with structured mentoring towards Chartered status.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Producing highway drawing packages, construction details, specifications and supporting calculations.
- Preparing technical reports, design information, Road Safety Audit briefs and other project documentation.
- Designing highway layouts, junctions, access arrangements and associated infrastructure.
- Experience working on S278 and S38 schemes is desirable, with knowledge of drainage adoptions also advantageous, although not essential.
- Preparing and progressing Traffic Regulation Orders where required.
- Carrying out site visits, inspections and construction supervision.
- Attending and leading meetings with clients, developers, contractors and other designers.
- Liaising with other disciplines to coordinate designs and resolve technical issues.
- Providing support and progress updates to Senior Engineers and Project Managers.
- Checking the work of junior engineers and supporting their development.
- Contributing to project delivery, fee management, change control and client liaison.
- Supporting fee proposals, tenders and business development activity.
Typical Project Experience
Projects include:
- Major highway and transport corridor upgrades.
- Highway infrastructure for commercial, industrial and residential developments.
- Urban regeneration and public realm schemes.
- Junction improvements and local highway schemes.
- Active travel and sustainable transport projects.
- Light rail and mass-transit schemes across the UK and Europe.
What We're Looking For
- Degree or Master's qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- 3-6 years' relevant highway engineering experience.
- Strong experience in highway design, particularly S278 and S38 layouts.
- Good knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets, local authority standards and relevant guidance.
- Experience using AutoCAD and Civil 3D, Site 3D/PDS or similar highway design software.
- Ability to produce accurate drawings, calculations, specifications and technical submissions.
- Good understanding of CDM Regulations and their relevance to highway design.
- Comfortable working independently and taking responsibility for your own workload.
- Ability to check work and support less experienced engineers.
- Strong communication skills and confidence dealing with clients, contractors and other design disciplines.
- Commercially aware, with a focus on delivering work to programme, budget and the required quality.
- Highway drainage experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
- Progress towards IEng or CEng would be beneficial.
This is a good opportunity for a Highway Engineer looking to take on more responsibility and progress towards a senior role.
You'll have the opportunity to develop your technical, client-facing, commercial and project leadership skills, with mentoring and support towards Chartered status.
