Job description

The Service & Team:

Cornwall Council’s Communication Support Team is a small friendly team working in schools and settings across Cornwall. We comprise Speech and Language Therapists, Speech and Language Therapy Assistants and Advisory Teachers.

We are part of the wider SEND Support Service. We work closely with colleagues to provide advice, training and support on a wide range of general SEND issues such as the Graduated Response and EHC Needs Assessments. We value and support a wide range of continued professional development both within and outside of the county.

The Role:

We are seeking an enthusiastic Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work across schools and settings in Cornwall. This post will include developing support in settings for children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs. This can include delivering whole setting accessible training, peer support, as well as identifying inclusive strategies and advising on how to implement these.

You will also be required to provide specialist assessments and intervention for a small caseload of children. This can include undertaking Education Health and Care Needs Assessments and provision.

You will be supported to undertake relevant continuing professional development activities and independent learning activities to maintain and develop specialist knowledge and expertise as required for the post.

You will also produce high quality written reports and take part in peer reviews for quality assurance purposes.

You will develop close working relationships with colleagues from the team, those in the NHS as well as other teams within the Local Authority such as Social Care.

You will be responsible for managing your own diary and working independently, with children and young people always at the heart of everything you do.

This is a public/customer-facing role, where the statutory English language requirement for public sector workers applies.

This position will be subject to an enhanced criminal record disclosure check.

Working Pattern:

This role is four days per week. We are happy to talk about flexible working options.

What you’ll need to succeed:

You will be a successful and experienced Speech and Language Therapist with a passion for SEND. You will be registered with the HCPC. You will also be skilled at developing and delivering training as well as working in a holistic way to improve outcomes for our learners. You will enjoy working at a highly specialist level with children and young people with SLCN. This is an opportunity for someone who already has some specialist knowledge and skills in working with children and young people to develop these skills further. You will work well as part of a team as well as independently. You will have excellent communication skills, both spoken and written.

You will have knowledge of different types of SLCN and possible implications for individuals’ development and educational progress. You will be up to date with current research evidence for this population and use evidence-based practise to assess and support communication.
