Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join our recently expanded critical care specialist team - this is the third of three posts that we have covering our 3 critical care units in CTMUHB.

This job is suitable for a suitably skilled band 7. Additionally, if you are a Band 6 SLT, but lack the full remit of prerequisite skills, this Annex 21 post offers you a rare and exhilarating opportunity to up-skill in three highly specialist skills - critical care, tracheotomy, and FEES!

Depending on the skills you arrive with, we envisage the skill acquisition to take a maximum of 3 years to reach your full band 7 highly specialist title and salary.

CTM Therapies team work closely as wider MDTs with excellent opportunities for cross-discipline working and the opportunity to lead on AHP portfolios.

Your career progression is important to us and CTM has an excellent L&D offer as well as support for external learning. You will receive excellent support and clinical supervision from our experienced critical care SLTs and there are regular opportunities for internal and external training.

You will be the lead SLT at Critical Care unit, Prince Charles Hospital and act as a core member of the MDT which consists of Intensivists, Nurses, Clinical Psychology, Physiotherapy, OT, and Dietetics. You will also work at our other units - the Royal Glamorgan Hospital and the Princess of Wales Bridgend where needed to accelerate your skill acquisition.

You will provide communication and swallowing assessment and rehabilitation to critically ill patients including patients with a tracheostomy and/or ventilator dependent. You will use FEES to support decision making around tracheostomy weaning, upper airway rehabilitation and swallow/communication rehab.

NB: If an annexe 21 appointee, you will start by delivering care to post extubation/non-tracheostomised/non-vented patients and gradually work your way up to seeing more complex patients and delivering highly specialist interventions.

You will provide training within and outside profession and contribute to reports, local and national guidance and wider AHP workstreams.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board is part of the NHS Wales family. Our Health Board provides primary, secondary and community health and wellbeing services to around 450,000 people living in three County Boroughs: Bridgend Merthyr Tydfil, and Rhondda Cynon Taf.

We live by our core values:

We listen, learn and improve
We treat everyone with respect
We all work together as one team

Completion of the qualification/learning and achievement of postgraduate experience is a requirement of the contract of employment for Annex 21 candidates.

During this 36 month training period, salary will be paid in accordance with Annex 21 of the Terms and Conditions as follows:

  1. Months 1 - 12 of the training period will be paid at 65% of the top of Band 6 pay scale;
  2. Months 13 - 24 of the training period will be paid at 70% of the top of Band 7 pay scale;
  3. Months 25 - 36 of the training period will be paid at 75% of the top of the Band 7 pay scale.

Upon successful attainment of the identified qualification/experience/competencies, even if sooner than the 36 month allocated timeframe, the post holder will automatically move to the Band 7 as they will then meet the full KSF outline of this role and be expected to undertake all duties within the Job Description as indicated.

NOTE:

There will be some circumstances where current staff apply for these posts, and their new trainee salary will be below that of their current salary. To aid both the recruitment and development of staff it is recommended that staff across NHS Wales should have continuity of pay for the duration of the training to avoid financial detriment. This should apply when staff take up training posts both within and across NHS Wales organisations. Following this training, the remuneration will be the bottom of Band 7, again without financial detriment.
