Job summary

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and driven physiotherapist to join the cancer services team at NUH as a Band 7 highly specialist physiotherapist. For this permanent role we are looking for a physiotherapist with specialised clinical experience within oncology and haematology, or relevant transferable skills from other specialities and a passion for cancer care.

The successful candidate will have significant experience as a qualified physiotherapist within oncology and/or haematology, as well as a variety of other core areas such as respiratory, health care of the older person, neurology and orthopaedics.

As a highly specialist physiotherapist you will have demonstrable leadership skills and service development experience, excellent communication and time management skills with an ability to build networks to develop our existing physiotherapy service.

NUH is a large acute teaching hospital with many specialist centres. This post will allow you to work across areas with a great variety of patients and alongside many experienced clinicians. You will be expected to work collaboratively across the MDT. We are looking for an excellent team player who is experienced, creative, flexible, and proactive to assist us in delivering high quality patient care.

Main duties of the job

Please refer to the attached job description and person specification for full details of the job. Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading Physiotherapy and support workers in assessment, rehabilitation and often complex discharge planning for patients across haematology/oncology wards at City Campus.
  • Managing a team in a fast-paced environment, supporting Team Leaders in management of sickness absence, annual leave, education, robust supervision and staff appraisal.
  • Working closely with therapy colleagues as a highly specialist physiotherapist working to deliver service development projects in a range of clinical areas, keeping NUH at the forefront of clinical excellence.
  • Working independently across a varied caseload, prioritising and delegating appropriately as well as supporting band 5 physiotherapists, support workers and students.
  • Supporting the wider Medical Inpatients team with respiratory and neurological input, as needed, within a senior structure that provides peer support and training.
  • Developing and promoting effective professional working relationships with members of the team, the wider Multidisciplinary Team and further networking.
  • Maintaining a keen interest in evidence-based practice, clinical education & leadership.
  • Maintaining accurate records (patient records, audit and other data).
  • Role modelling NUH values in everyday practice.
  • Participating in the out of hours respiratory service (on-call, late shift and weekends).

Physiotherapy and OT services are part of the Therapies, Outpatients and Phlebotomy Directorate, within Specialist Clinical Services at NUH. We are a diverse team of AHPs and support staff, employing over 800 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

Job responsibilities
  • Permanent 0.5 WTE (18.75h).
  • Core hours are worked 08.00 16.00. Working pattern can be discussed but will ideally be spread over three days and include Wednesdays.
  • Previous respiratory and out of hours working experience is essential.
  • Additional duties will include participation in on-call and weekend working as well as a late shift (1-9pm). Weekends are rostered with expected frequency of 1:6, an on-call average 1 per month and late shifts approximately 1 per month but all are dependent on service need and staffing levels.

Qualifications
  • BSc Physiotherapy or equivalent
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of appropriate post graduate study and professional development within specialist area
Skills and Experience
  • Wide ranging and extensive experience of working within specialist area
  • Knowledge of management processes to be able to provide first line management
  • Able to deliver training and educate individuals, team and wider MDT
  • Experience in evaluating current research and making recommendations for change in practice, and implementing these changes
  • Previous NHS experience
  • Neurological rehabilitation
Communication and relationship skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to use a range of communication skills with patients to progress treatment plans effectively
  • Able to understand team dynamics and adapt approach to achieve the best outcome for patients
  • Able to communicate complex patient-related information to ensure collaborative MDT working
Analytical and judgement skills
  • Able to assess complex information, formulate a diagnosis and plan patient management using clinical reasoning skills and a range of treatment options
  • Able to make decisions about the allocation of a caseload to a team of staff
  • Lead on the development of improvements in service delivery and clinical practice using evidence based practice to recommend changes
Planning and organisational skills
  • Able to plan the delivery of a service for a specialist area where there is variable capacity and fluctuating demand
  • Able to organise and plan the activity of staff and self
Physical skills
  • Able to handle and move complex patients using a way that promotes rehabilitation and is safe
  • Able to move and use medical devices
Other requirements
  • Able to undertake out of hours duties including on-call, weekends and bank holidays
  • Able to travel cross campus and beyond the trust as needed
