Contract: 12 months (Although this position is a 12 months fixed-term contract, the actual contract duration will be adjusted to account for the time taken to advertise the post, complete the hiring process, and finalise pre-employment checks. Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated & experienced pharmacist to join our dynamic & friendly team in the Adult Critical Care Unit. As a key member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT), you will be responsible for providing expert pharmaceutical advice on complex clinical cases, supporting the expansion of our high-dependency unit, & contributing to the overall strategic development of the pharmacy service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the running of our clinical pharmacy service, including writing guidelines, line management, providing training, overseeing audits, and supporting governance and finance reports.
  • Improve the pharmacy service of our expanding high-dependency unit.
  • Collaborate with the ACCU governance and delirium group to provide critical pharmacy input and help improve patient outcomes.
  • Work closely with medical, nursing, and pharmacy teams to deliver optimal care.
  • Provide training and development to junior pharmacy staff and support their professional growth within the critical care setting.
  • Offer leadership, management & clinical support to the surgical team as required.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out the full range of duties as the Highly Specialist Pharmacist in Critical Care to deliver patient focused, quality care, based primarily at the Royal London Hospital.

To promote the responsible, safe and cost-effective prescribing of medicines within Critical Care to optimise clinical outcomes, minimise adverse reactions and improve medicines safety. The post holder will be supporting the Lead Clinical Pharmacist, Critical Care in leading a team of staff in the delivery of a high quality clinical, professional pharmacy service to the speciality.

Experience
  • Significant experience of working as a registered clinical pharmacy practitioner in an acute hospital NHS setting
  • Previous experience of providing a clinical pharmacy service to critical care at Band 7 level or equivalent.
  • Appropriate experience in providing a hospital based pharmacy service to a Critical Care or high dependency unit (Level 2 & Level 3)
  • Experience in supervising and organising staff and work
  • Evidence of basic teaching and tutoring in a hospital setting through training others e.g. pre-registration / basic grade pharmacists
  • Ability to undertake and facilitate quality improvement, reflective practice, teaching and CPD
  • Successful experience of managing and leading projects
  • Experience of providing evaluated information on drug expenditure.
  • Experience of critical care prescribing including Continuous infusion prescribing and review
Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills.
  • Able to work unsupervised and under pressure
  • Able to communicate complex information effectively to all health and care professionals, colleagues, patients and their loved ones
  • Demonstrates ability to deliver staff training
  • Close working with the multidisciplinary and wider pharmacy team to optimise patient flow and patient outcomes.

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate with and influence senior medical staff and senior management
  • Management of risk in the clinical use of medicines
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of drug and therapeutics at Diploma level or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of medicines management systems at ward level
  • Understanding of the pharmaceutical care needs of adult critical care patients
  • Excellent knowledge of the medical management and pharmaceutical care needs of Critical Care (level 2 & 3) and surgical patients
  • An awareness of current national standards, guidelines and service delivery issues relevant to critical care and surgical patients
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of patient safety initiatives
  • Knowledge of rationing decisions in the NHS, Payment by Results (PbR) and commissioning.
Qualifications
  • MPharm or equivalent
  • Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC
  • Independent prescribing qualification or willingness to undertake
  • Postgraduate Pharmacy Qualification or equivalent experience (minimum postgraduate diploma level)
  • MSc in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent.
