Highly Specialist Acute Paediatric SLT (Mat Leave Cover)

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Highly Specialist SLT to join our dynamic and supportive multidisciplinary team at Whittington Hospital on a maternity cover basis.

You will provide expert assessment and intervention to a varied and complex paediatric caseload, working across:

Paediatric Outpatients

General Paediatric Ward.

This is a fantastic opportunity to consolidate and expand your clinical skills in a stimulating acute setting. You'll benefit from close working relationships with a wide range of professionals including paediatricians, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nursing staff. You'll also provide supervision to student SLTs, and contribute to service development initiatives.

We're looking for a clinician who is:

Proactive, adaptable, and confident working within a fast-paced environment

Experienced in complex paediatric dysphagia and communication disorders

Passionate about family-centred care and evidence-based practice

A strong communicator with excellent teamworking skills

Main duties of the job

To continue to develop and manage the outpatient SLT service to infants and children with feeding difficulties referred to the SLT department.

To work closely with the Clinical Lead SLT on the LNU/acute paeds

Work with other members of the MDT, in particular the dietitians and paediatricians

To jointly run the VFSS clinic for paediatric in and out patients

Working with clinical lead to develop audits and MDT research proposals especially in paediatric /NICU settings

To continue to support developmental care

Work Closely with the MDTs within the Hospital, and community

Supervision and support of students and other SLT Team

To work with and liaise with SLT colleagues across the ICO, and London ODN

Education/Qualifications
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Qualification
  • Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Evidence of Completion of relevant specialist training courses e.g. FINE, NBO, IBCLC, SOFFI
  • Post Graduate Dysphagia Qualification including experience working at Paediatric Dysphagia Competency Level D
  • Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) & relevant specialist groups/ Clinical Excellence Networks
  • Experience working at Student supervision and trainingNeonatal Dysphagia Competency Level C
  • Experience working at Neonatal Dysphagia Competency Level C
Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - including observation, listening and empathy skills
  • Good presentation skills, verbal and non -verbal
  • Demonstrates ability to be a good team member as well as to work independently and manage own caseload
  • Standard key board skills & the ability to use IT packages such as Word, Outlook, Power point & Excel
  • Independent in managing own caseload
Knowledge
  • Knowledge and experience of paediatric and neonatal dysphagia assessment and management to highly specialist level.
  • Knowledge of varying approaches to the assessment and management of patients with dysphagia including instrumental assessments (Video fluoroscopy / FEES).
  • Knowledge of early communication needs and support within neonatal and acute paediatric settings.
  • Understanding of the ethical issues in paediatric and neonatal dysphagia management
  • Experience of MDT working in supporting children with feeding difficulties, and their families
  • Demonstration of appropriate triaging skills, including prioritisation
  • Skills in delivering presentations and training, including basic adaptations to presentation / training style for a range of audiences
  • Good understanding of clinical governance principles
  • Accepts responsibility and accountability for own work and ability to reflect on own practice
  • Seeks and uses professional support appropriately
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD and reflective practice
  • Other Awareness and respect for colleagues, patients and relatives cultural, religious and emotional needs and beliefs
  • Able to travel across sites as and when required
  • Demonstrates flexibility
