Somerlea Park Junior School is seeking a motivated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our school community. The role involves leading whole-class teaching, supporting small groups and individual learners, with a focus on helping all pupils reach their potential.

You will provide cover lessons, collaborate with class teachers, and support pupils' academic, social, emotional and behavioural development, including SEND pupils to access the curriculum effectively.

Qualifications

  • HLTA status or equivalent essential.
  • GCSE Maths and English grade 4-9 (A-C) essential.
  • Educated to a minimum of Level 3 essential.
  • Understanding of behaviour management strategies essential.
  • Knowledge of the National Curriculum including literacy and numeracy strategies essential.

Responsibilities

Job description

Somerlea Park Junior School is looking for a motivated and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our school community.

This role offers a varied mix of responsibilities, from leading whole-class teaching to supporting small groups and individual learners, with a particular focus on helping all pupils achieve their full potential.

Key responsibilities will include:

Providing cover lessons and delivering whole-class teaching when needed (e.g. PPA cover or short-term teacher absence).

Working collaboratively with class teachers to plan, prepare and deliver differentiated learning activities.

Supporting pupils’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioural development, individually or in groups.

Helping pupils with additional needs (SEND) to access thecurriculum effectively.

Monitoring and assessing pupil progress, giving feedback to teachers and contributing to reporting.

Managing learning resources, preparing classrooms, and ensuring learning environments are well set up.

Sometimes supervising other support staff or TAs, guiding less experienced colleagues.

Participating in school-wide activities, meetings, and contributing to ongoing professional development.

Essential skills and qualities: HLTA status or equivalent qualities:

Strong understanding of the primary curriculum and experience across key stage(s).

Excellent classroom management and behaviour management skills.

Ability to adapt learning for individual needs; experience with SEND is desirable.

Good organisational, communication and teamwork skills.

A flexible and positive attitude, willing to pitch in where needed.

Qualifications

Meet Higher Level Teaching Assistant standards or equivalent qualifications or experience essential

GCSE Maths and English grade 4-9 (A-C) or equivalent essential

Educated to a minimum of level 3 essential

CPD / Training

Understanding of behaviour management strategies essential

. Knowledge & understanding of the National Curriculum including the literacy and numeracy strategies. essential

Knowledge of the requirements of the national literacy and numeracy strategies essential

Understanding of First Aid procedures.

Experience

Experience of teaching whole classes. essential

Evidence of specialism in specific curriculum areas or areas of learning difficulty essential

A minimum of two years’ experience of working with children (either paid or unpaid capacity) preferably in an educational setting. essential

Attend training as appropriate and training relevant to the post, including behaviour management and Child Protection training. essential

Demonstrable levels of numeracy & literacy equivalent to GCSE (A-C). essential

Hold relevant qualifications at a level equivalent to at least NVQ Level 3 essential

Personal Attributes

Ability to supervise pupils effectively both in and out of school in line with the school’s behaviour policy. essential

Ability and willingness to work constructively as part of a team essential

Ability to organise, lead and motivate others essential

Able to form and maintain appropriate professional relationships and boundaries with children and young people. essential
