Job summary

Catcliffe Primary School is seeking a motivated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our school community. The role involves leading whole-class teaching, delivering lessons, and supporting small groups and individuals to help all pupils reach their potential.

You will work closely with class teachers to plan differentiated activities, support SEND pupils, monitor progress, and contribute to reporting.

Responsibilities

• Provide cover lessons and deliver whole-class teaching when needed (PPA/absence)

• Monitor progress and provide feedback to teachers
• Manage learning resources and prepare learning environments
• Supervise other staff when required

This role offers a varied mix of responsibilities, from leading whole-class teaching to supporting small group and individual learners, with a particular focus on helping all pupils achieve their full potential.

Key responsibilities

• Providing cover lessons and delivering whole-class teaching when needed (e.g. PPA cover or short-term teacher absence).
• Working collaboratively with class teachers to plan, prepare and deliver differentiated learning activities.
• Supporting pupils’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioural development, individually or in groups.
• Helping pupils with additional needs (SEND) to access the curriculum effectively.
• Monitoring and assessing pupil progress, giving feedback to teachers and contributing to reporting.
• Managing learning resources, preparing classrooms, and ensuring learning environments are well set up.
• Sometimes supervising other support staff or TAs, guiding less experienced colleagues.
• Participating in school-wide activities, meetings, and contributing to ongoing professional development.

Essential skills and qualities

HLTA status or equivalent qualities:

• Strong understanding of the primary curriculum and experience across key stage(s).
• Excellent classroom management and behaviour management skills.
• Ability to adapt learning for individual needs; experience with SEND is desirable.
• Good organisational, communication and teamwork skills.
• A flexible and positive attitude, willing to pitch in where needed.

CPD / Training

• Understanding of behaviour management strategies essential

Experience

• Experience of teaching whole classes. essential
• Evidence of specialism in specific curriculum areas or areas of learning difficulty essential
• A minimum of two years’ experience of working with children (either paid or unpaid capacity) preferably in an educational setting. essential
• Attend training as appropriate and training relevant to the post, including behaviour management and Child Protection training. essential
• Demonstrable levels of numeracy & literacy equivalent to GCSE (A-C). essential
• Hold relevant qualifications at a level equivalent to at least NVQ Level 3 essential
