Job summary

Pertemps Plymouth is recruiting an HGV Driver for Plymouth City Council to support commercial and bulky waste collections across Plymouth. The role involves driving 7.5T–26T vehicles, loading bulky items when required, and maintaining safety and compliance.

Pay is £15.56 per hour with overtime and Sundays at higher rates. 37 hours per week, 8-week temporary assignment starting 26.10.2026, with shifts Mon-Thu 06:00–14:30 and Fri 06:00–11:00.

Qualifications

• Valid HGV/LGV licence for the vehicle category
• Current Driver CPC qualification
• Digital Tachograph Card
• No more than 6 penalty points
• Good understanding of driving regulations and Working Time rules

Responsibilities

• Safely operate a range of waste collection vehicles (7.5T to 26T)
• Complete commercial and bulky waste collections across Plymouth
• Load, transport and dispose of waste per enviro legislation
• Carry out daily vehicle inspections and report defects
• Maintain accurate records and drive regulations compliance
• Adhere to Driver CPC and Working Time Directive standards
• Deliver excellent customer service to businesses and the public
• Support Plymouth City Council's environmental objectives

HGV Driver / Waste Collection Driver

Location: Chelson Meadow - Commercial Waste, Plymouth, PL9

Pay Rate: £15.56 per hour | £19.45 per hour for overtime and Sundays

Assignment Length: Temporary (8 weeks)

Starting 26.10.2026 and expected to run until 20.12.2026

Hours: 37 hours per week

Shift Pattern:

• Monday to Thursday: 06:00am - 14:30pm
• Friday: 06:00am - 11:00am

Pertemps are recruiting on behalf of Plymouth City Council for an HGV Driver to support commercial waste collections and bulky waste services across Plymouth. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a dedicated environmental services team committed to keeping the city clean, safe and sustainable.

The role involves driving a range of vehicles from 7.5T to 26T and requires a physically fit individual who is comfortable assisting with the loading and unloading of bulky waste items when required.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely operate a range of waste collection vehicles, including 7.5T and 26T vehicles.
• Complete commercial waste and bulky waste collections throughout Plymouth.
• Load, transport and dispose of waste materials in line with environmental legislation and company procedures.
• Carry out daily vehicle inspections and promptly report any defects.
• Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with driving regulations.
• Adhere to Driver CPC requirements, Working Time Directive regulations and Operator Licence standards.
• Deliver excellent customer service when interacting with businesses and members of the public.
• Support Plymouth City Council's environmental and sustainability objectives.

What We're Looking For

• A valid HGV/LGV driving licence relevant to the vehicle category operated
• A current Driver CPC qualification & valid Digital Tachograph Card
• No more than 6 penalty points on your licence
• A good understanding of driving regulations and working time rules
• A strong commitment to health and safety standards
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• A reliable and flexible approach to workThe ability to work both independently and as part of a team
