Job summary

VanRath Search & Selection seeks an experienced HGV Driver (Public Sector) in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. The role focuses on waste and recycling services, operating Category C1 vehicles and supporting frontline operations on a 3–6 month contract with potential extension.

Key duties include driving Category C1 vehicles, supervising crews, conducting vehicle checks, and assisting at recycling centres while upholding safety standards and customer service excellence.

Qualifications

• Valid Category C1 licence.
• Full CPC/ Driver Qualification Card.
• Minimum 1 year’s experience operating with a Category C1 licence.
• Knowledge of health & safety procedures (manual handling, reversing assistants).
• Current driving licence valid for C1+E.
• Experience in waste management or refuse/recycling is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Drive and operate Category C1 vehicles to support waste collections and environmental services.
• Supervise and support crew to ensure safe, efficient operations.
• Carry out routine vehicle checks, maintenance and safety reporting.
• Assist the public at Household Recycling Centres and promote recycling opportunities.
• Collect domestic, commercial, bulky, and recyclable waste adhering to standards.
• Support frontline services during adverse weather or emergencies.

Our public sector client is seeking an experienced and motivated HGVDriverto join their Operations team. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a well-structured organisation delivering essentialfrontlineservices to the community. This will be an initial 3-6 month contract with great likelihood of extension.

The Role

As a Waste Resource Management Driver, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality waste and recycling services across the borough. Duties include:

• Driving and operating specialist vehicles (CategoryC1) to support waste collections, street cleansing, and environmental services.
• Supervising and supporting crew members to ensure safe, efficient operations.
• Carrying out routine vehicle checks, maintenance, and safety reporting.
• Assisting the public at Household Recycling Centres and maximising recycling opportunities.
• Collecting domestic, commercial, bulky, and recyclable waste, ensuring safe handling and adherence to service standards.
• Supporting otherfrontlineservices during adverse weather or emergencies (e.g., gritting and snow clearance).

About You

We are looking for individuals who can work both independently and as part of a team, with strong organisational and customer service skills.

ValidCategoryC1licence.

FullCPC/ Driver Qualification Card.

Minimum 1years’experienceoperating with a CategoryC1licence.

Working knowledge ofhealth & safety procedures(manual handling, reversing assistants).

Ability to work with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative and reliability.

• Current valid driving licence minimum C1+ E

Previous experience in the waste management sector, particularly refuse collection and recycling.

Experience operating mechanical sweepers.
