Job summary

Historic Environment Scotland in Blackness Depot is recruiting a time served Stonemason for permanent, pensionable employment. You will plan, organise and conduct masonry repairs, ranging from pointing to dressing stone, primarily at Blackness Depot with potential work on other sites.

The role includes training apprentices and applying traditional conservation techniques. The position requires advanced craft qualifications, knowledge of historic building conservation, lime mortar skills, and

Qualifications

• Time served stonemason with advanced Craft Level SVQ level 4 or SCQF level 6
• Knowledge of traditional building crafts and current conservation practices
• Experience with conservation, presentation and repair of historic monuments/listed buildings
• Experience using lime mortars
• Good Health & Safety at Work knowledge

Responsibilities

• Carry out conservation and routine maintenance works to HES monuments in Blackness area
• Stone cutting and hewing of architectural mouldings and stones for Blackness Depot and other sites
• Traditional building repairs and indentation of stonework
• Raking out and pointing defective joints and beds
• Promote traditional conservation techniques on projects
• Operate hand tools and machinery (disc saws, mixers, compressors)
• Provide training and mentoring for apprentice stonemasons in traditional skills
• Comply with HS Health and Safety Policy
• Attend training courses including First Aid when required
