Wales Air Ambulance seeks a skilled HEMS Captain to lead the aviation component on life-saving missions across Wales, operating a single-pilot H145. You will fly in a demanding environment, ensuring safety, professionalism and strict regulatory compliance.

The role requires extensive PIC experience on helicopters, IR/H, and a current medical, with rostered shifts including nights. A strong commitment to emergency services and patient care is essential.

Qualifications

• Hold UK CAA Part-FCL ATPL(H) or CPL(H) with ATPL(H) exams, plus IR(H) and Class 1 Medical.
• Minimum 1000 hours as PIC (500 on helicopters) or equivalent PICUS experience as PICUS.
• Minimum 500 hours helicopter operating experience in a relevant environment; night VMC PIC 20h.
• Right to live and work in the UK; EU/UK driving licence.

Position: HEMS Captain

Location: Welshpool

Working Hours: Rostered Basis

We are pleased to invite applications for the position of HEMS Captain in Welshpool in support of our prestigious charity partner, Wales Air Ambulance. As HEMS Captain, you will lead the aviation component of life-saving missions as part of a single-pilot operation flying H145 helicopters across Wales.

Flying in a stunning environment with constant challenges from both weather and terrain, this is probably the most rewarding experience a professional helicopter pilot is likely to face. Skills, Qualifications And Experience Required

• Provide safe, compliant and efficient flight operations in support of HEMS operations
• Conduct Company duties with diligence and professionalism, and operate in accordance with the Company operations manuals and other regulatory requirements
• Be responsible for actively engaging with the Company safety reporting scheme, taking a proactive stance on risk management, and reporting any events which may contribute towards continual improvement in safety
• Display kindness and professionalism whilst acting as a representative of the Company and actively engage with our charity partners and other industry stakeholders

Essential

• Current UK CAA Part-FCL ATPL (H) or CPL(H) with ATPL(H) theoretical exams, plus current UK CAA IR(H) plus current UK CAA Class 1 Medical
• Minimum 1000 hours as PIC of aircraft, of which 500 hours is as PIC/PICUS on helicopters; OR,
• Minimum 1000 hours as co-pilot in HEMS operations of which 500 hours are as PICUS and 100 hours as PIC of helicopters
• Minimum 500 hours operating experience in helicopters, gained in an operational environment similar to the intended operation
• Minimum 20 hours of VMC at night as PIC
• Willingness to work on a rostered basis including working night shifts
• Minimum Level 4 English Language proficiency standard
• EU/UK Driving Licence
• Right to live and work in the UK

Advantageous

• Current H145 Type Rating
• MCC qualification, or equivalent military credit, highly desirable but can be provided for the successful candidate
• 2000 hours total flight time
• NVG experience
• Previously operated in confined area
