Job description

Help Page Instruction Checker

Customer Service | Online Help Content | Remote
£28.00-£30.00/hour · Full-time or part-time

Can a visitor follow the steps as written?

The Help Page Instruction Checker reads assigned online guidance from the point of view of a customer trying to complete a routine task. You would compare the page with an approved process, follow links to see where they lead and note a step that is missing, confusing or out of sequence.

This is a remote support role for someone with good reading habits and a practical sense of what makes instructions usable. It does not involve deciding company policy or rewriting technical guidance without review.

For example, a help article might tell a person to select a button that has since been renamed. Another may link to a general page when a more specific approved form is intended. You would capture the page title, the step involved, what you observed and the source that shows the expected process. A colleague responsible for content can then approve a correction. Where the team allows simple edits, you may update wording in the online editor and preview it before publication.

This work differs from answering a live customer enquiry. The immediate product is a clearer help page that may prevent many people from getting stuck later. You may still receive feedback from customer service colleagues who have noticed the same question recurring. Your job is to turn that feedback into a specific check, not to assume that every complaint proves the page is wrong. If the current process is itself unclear, ask for the authoritative version before changing public instructions.

A review in ordinary terms

Start by reading the whole page once. Identify the action the visitor is meant to complete and then check each step against the supplied reference. Follow links, look at form names and observe where a person could be left without a next step. Make a short note that a content owner can act on. A useful note says, for example, that step three names a button differently from the current form; a vague statement such as ‘page needs work’ does not help. If the article is accurate, record that outcome too.

Activities may include:

  • Reviewing assigned help articles against current approved instructions.
  • Checking whether links and named pages open as described.
  • Finding outdated button labels or references to removed steps.
  • Recording a precise issue with a page location and suggested clarification.
  • Using the online editor for limited, approved changes.
  • Previewing a change to ensure the sequence remains understandable.
  • Passing a technical fault or policy conflict to the responsible team.
  • Tracking whether an issue was reviewed, corrected or still needs approval.

You do not need to be a technical writer. Previous website, office administration or customer service experience may be useful but is not essential. The employer will teach its content system and review boundaries. Someone with little formal experience who can follow instructions carefully and explain a confusing step in plain English can contribute. Basic computer confidence is important; programming and advanced analytics are not part of the job.

The work requires patience with details but also a sense of proportion. You are not being asked to polish every sentence to your personal style. The purpose is to help a visitor finish a real task using current information. When a page needs a larger rewrite, you should explain why and hand it to the content owner rather than making unapproved changes across the website. A home office area suited to concentrated reading supports this online work.

Pay and working arrangement

Remote, full-time or part-time, at £28.00-£30.00 per hour. The hiring team will explain how pages are assigned and who approves a public edit. This is an introductory role with training on the particular site.

Joining the selection process

You can show relevant skills through any experience checking instructions or helping someone find their way through a process. A previous website role is not required. If your CV includes careful writing or use of an online editor, make it easy to find.
