Job summary

Hedena Health Ltd GP partnership is seeking a Healthcare Assistant who will perform venepuncture and blood sampling on GP referrals. The role includes labeling, recording in EMIS, and dispatching samples, along with routine clinic tasks such as blood pressure monitoring and ECGs.

You will immunise patients with flu and B12, assist with minor surgery, and provide wound care while chaperoning during examinations. Leg ulcer care is desirable.

Qualifications

• Experience with blood pressure monitoring and baseline measurements (BMI, height, weight).
• Ability to perform ECG recording and urinalysis.
• Conduct diabetic and NHS health checks and assess mental health checks.
• Duties include suture removal and wound care.
• Chaperone patients and assist with minor procedures such as coil fittings.
• Immunisations including flu and B12 injections; capable of taking Doppler readings and ordering stock.

Responsibilities

• Take blood samples on direct referral from GP or nurse practitioner, including venepuncture.

Job description

This Healthcare Assistant post sits within the Hedena Health Ltd GP partnership, working under the Nurse Manager. The core of the work is venepuncture and blood sampling, taken only on direct referral from a GP or nurse practitioner, alongside sample labelling, record-keeping and dispatch. The role also covers routine clinic tasks such as blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, immunisations and wound care, so it is broader than phlebotomy alone. Leg ulcer care is desirable.

What the job involves

• Take blood samples on direct referral from a GP or nurse practitioner, including venepuncture with standard equipment
• Explain procedures to patients, gain their details and agreement, and keep them comfortable
• Label samples accurately and check patient identity against EMIS records
• Record each sample collection in the patient record using the correct templates
• Store samples in suitable containers and dispatch them promptly to the right laboratories
• Report anomalies to a senior member of staff and tell the GP or nurse of significant patient issues
• Carry out quality control procedures to meet internal and external regulations
• Carry out routine patient care tasks such as blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, urinalysis, NHS health checks and baseline tests
• Give flu and B12 immunisations, and carry out wound care and suture removal
• Chaperone patients during examinations and assist GPs and nurses with minor surgery and coil fittings
• Carry out diabetic checks, doppler and mental illness health checks
• Order stock as required
