Background to the Post: This post is to provide resident cover and experience at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Initially, posts will be offered for 6 months, with potential extension to 12 months or longer based on performance and vacancies. Rotations to other sites may be available as vacancies allow.
Summary: The ICU senior clinical fellow is expected to join the registrar grade tier, providing full on-call cover for the units, including weekends and nights. Airway experience is essential.
Main duties of the job
Duties and responsibilities: When on duty in ICU, the resident will review and manage patients under supervision, be part of a multidisciplinary team, perform procedures, liaise with teams, update relatives, and act as the first point of contact for ICU nursing staff.
All junior grades work closely with consultants. ICM residents are expected to supervise and train medical students and junior doctors attached to ICU.
Outline Timetable: Minimum of twice daily multidisciplinary ward rounds on each site, weekly MDTs, daily meetings with Infectious Diseases/Microbiology consultants or SpRs. Some ward rounds are delegated. Shifts vary from 9.5 to 13 hours, averaging less than 48 hours/week, including weekends. The service operates 7 days a week.
Additional educational activities include fortnightly M&M meetings, weekly teaching, journal clubs, and other governance and learning sessions.
All junior doctors receive an induction, including electronic and printed materials, network transfer training, and BASIC courses at no cost. The trust offers various courses in management and IT, and access to ALS courses. Night shifts are expected to be no more than 1 in 6.
Exceptional candidates may be considered for specialist fellowships in areas like neuro, teaching/simulation, echo, FUSIC Heart and Lung / BSE1. The role can be standalone or part of Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) with prior approval. GMC registration is required; previous ICU/anesthetics experience (>12 months) and postgraduate exams are essential.
Person specification
Qualifications: GMC-registered/licensed Medical Practitioner, FRCA/MRCP/MCEM/MRCS or equivalent, and additional degrees (BSc, MSc, MD, MPhil, PhD).
Language: Fluent in English (OET B or IELTS 7.0 in all domains).
Teaching: Evidence of teaching activity, postgraduate training, and regional/national teaching development.
Academic Achievements: Understanding of research, publications.
Audit: Evidence of audit activities and presentations.
Clinical skills: CVC and arterial line insertion, ALS or equivalent courses.
Relevant experience: Minimum 12 months airway and ICU experience.
