Job summary

Group55 Ltd is seeking an experienced Head of Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) to provide strategic and operational leadership across the business. You will drive governance, compliance, risk control, and a strong safety culture, supporting operations, customers and suppliers.

The role involves leading HSE improvements, audits, incident investigations, and KPI reporting, with cross-functional collaboration across Production, Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering and Purchasing.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Own and lead the HSE improvement roadmap and governance framework.

Role Description:

Provide strategic and operational leadership for Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) management across Group55, ensuring effective governance, compliance and risk control are embedded throughout the business. The role is responsible for driving a strong safety culture, supporting operational teams, reducing environmental risk, and leading continuous improvement initiatives that protect people, support customers and ensure safe, responsible and compliant ways of working across all functions.

Responsibilites:

• Own and lead the HSE improvement roadmap, governance framework and operational support plan for Group55.
• Maintain legal compliance and audit readiness, ensuring HSE policies, procedures, instructions, standards and records are clear, controlled, practical and effective.
• Set HSE standards across the business and ensure they are translated into practical controls, training, workplace behaviours, inspections and performance expectations.
• Lead and support accident, near miss, unsafe condition and environmental incident investigations, ensuring root cause, corrective actions, ownership and effectiveness checks are clearly managed.
• Support customer-facing HSE and environmental matters where incidents, complaints, CAPA responses, audit findings or service concerns require factual, timely and evidence-based input.
• Review business, customer and contractor requirements where HSE or environmental controls are required, ensuring expectations are understood, implemented and maintained with relevant managers and functional leads.
• Lead risk assessment, workplace inspection, contractor control, change control, equipment safety review and operational risk reduction activity.
• Own the HSE element of SQDMC routines, ensuring safety risks, environmental concerns, incidents, actions, compliance gaps and improvement priorities are visible and acted upon.
• Develop and report HSE KPIs, trends and risks, ensuring managers have clear visibility of performance, weaknesses, escalation points and improvement priorities.
• Support change control by assessing HSE impact, implementation readiness, required controls, training needs and post-change effectiveness.
• Support the environmental improvement roadmap by defining the systems, controls, evidence and routines required before the business pursues additional environmental schemes or accreditations.
• Drive continual improvement activity that reduces risk, improves safe working standards, strengthens compliance, reduces waste and supports operational performance.
• Remain actively involved at the point of issue when required, initiating cross-functional support, helping teams remove blockers and ensuring actions progress through to completion.
• Provide leadership and practical support to managers, team leaders and employees, setting clear expectations, developing capability, coaching effective problem solving and creating a culture of accountability and professional standards.

Personal Attributes/Skills:

• Strong working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental management within an FMCG, manufacturing, personal care, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food or similarly regulated environment.
• Experience of maintaining HSE controls, legal compliance, audit readiness, incident management, environmental improvement and operational risk reduction.
• Recognised HSE qualification or equivalent senior-level practical experience in Health, Safety and Environmental management.
• Knowledge of SQDMC, KPI routines, visual management, daily escalation and structured problem solving would be advantageous.
• IOSH, NEBOSH, environmental management, auditing, Lean, Six Sigma or root cause investigation training would be advantageous.
• Strong communication, influencing, decision-making, report writing and stakeholder management skills.
• Competent user of Microsoft Office and business systems used to manage documents, actions, data, audits and KPIs.

Technical/Professional Experience:

• HSE management experience in a manufacturing or contract manufacturing environment.
• Proven ability to lead legal compliance, incident investigation, environmental controls, contractor management, risk assessment, workplace inspection and HSE KPI reporting.
• Experience supporting daily, weekly and monthly operational routines where HSE performance must be visible, measured, escalated and improved.
• Experience working cross-functionally with Production, Manufacturing, Warehouse, Technical, Quality, Engineering, Facilities, Purchasing and Commercial teams.
• Ability to balance governance and compliance requirements with practical shop-floor engagement, coaching, problem solving and disciplined follow-through.

This role will be office-based in Chorley, Lancashire, working 37.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Group55 offer a company profit share bonus after a qualifying period.
