Job summary

Hunter Philips Executive Search is seeking a Head of Transmission to lead growth and delivery of high‑voltage substation and grid infrastructure projects. This senior role blends engineering oversight, team development and accountability for project and commercial performance.

The role requires overseeing HV AC substations, HVDC interfaces, and multidisciplinary teams, while shaping design standards, risk management, and delivery interfaces.

Qualifications

• Proven leadership of engineering teams or a transmission business function within a consultancy, contractor, utility or OEM.
• Strong understanding of substation design, protection and control, construction interfaces and commissioning.
• Experience working with transmission owners and their technical requirements.
• A track record of managing resources, budgets, client relationships and technical delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead the transmission engineering function across HV AC substations and associated grid infrastructure, including HVDC interfaces.
• Oversee multidisciplinary teams covering primary plant, protection and control, secondary systems, and commissioning.
• Ensure projects meet technical, safety, quality, programme and budget requirements.
• Set engineering standards and provide oversight of design assurance, technical risks and complex project interfaces.
• Develop relationships with transmission network owners, developers, OEMs and delivery partners.
• Support bids, resource planning and business development to grow the transmission portfolio.
• Recruit, mentor and develop engineering leaders, building the capability needed for future projects.
• Work with project and commercial teams to manage delivery performance and resolve escalated issues
