Job summary

Rise Technical Recruitment Ltd is seeking a Head of Structural Technologies for the Construction Trades at a Further Education provider in Slough. The role oversees Plumbing, Electrical Installation and Carpentry & Joinery curricula, leading Programme Managers and Lecturers with a minimum teaching commitment of around 10 hours per week.

Are you an experienced Construction Curriculum Leader, Programme Manager or Head of Department looking for your next leadership opportunity within Further Education?

Do you want to lead a clearly defined Construction Trades department, develop teaching staff and play a key role in shaping the future of Plumbing, Electrical and Carpentry provision?

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a well-established Further Education provider in a senior curriculum leadership position. Unlike many Head of Department roles, this position has a focused single-site remit across core Construction Trades, without responsibility for Engineering, Motor Vehicle or multiple campuses.

As Head of Structural Technologies, you'll lead a team of Programme Managers and Lecturers across the Construction provision. You'll take responsibility for curriculum delivery, quality improvement, learner retention and achievement, staffing, resources and the continued development of the department, while maintaining a minimum teaching commitment of around 10 hours per week.

You’ll work closely with the Curriculum Director and alongside another Head responsible for Engineering and Motor Vehicle, giving you a strong support structure while still having ownership of your curriculum area. With the College continuing to develop its T Level provision, you'll also have the opportunity to influence future curriculum direction and help ensure programmes remain aligned with industry requirements.

The ideal candidate will already have curriculum or programme management experience within Further Education. This could suit an established Head of Department or Curriculum Leader, or a strong Programme Manager with around two or more years' management experience who is ready to progress. Candidates from specialist training or military training environments may also be considered where they can demonstrate strong leadership, teaching qualifications and relevant technical credibility.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Construction education professional to move into a senior leadership role with a defined remit, strong internal support and genuine opportunities for further management development and progression.

The role:

• Lead the Construction Trades curriculum across Plumbing, Electrical Installation and Carpentry & Joinery.
• Manage and support Programme Managers and Lecturers within the department.
• Take responsibility for curriculum delivery, learner achievement, retention and quality improvement.
• Maintain a minimum teaching commitment of approximately 10 hours per week.
• Deliver practical and theory-based teaching within your specialist area.
• Support staff performance, development and challenging management conversations where required.
• Oversee staffing, resources, timetabling and curriculum planning.
• Monitor learner outcomes and implement improvement strategies.
• Work closely with the Curriculum Director and wider College leadership team.
• Support the continued development of T Level and Construction provision.
• Full-time permanent position, 37 hours per week.
• Single-site leadership role with a clearly defined Construction Trades remit.
• Excellent package including Teachers' Pension, approximately 60 days off annually, free parking and professional development.

The person:

• Curriculum Leader, Programme Manager, Head of Department or similar education management background.
• Strong curriculum / programme management experience.
• Around two or more years' management experience highly desirable.
• Recent Further Education experience preferred.
• Experience working with 14-19 learners beneficial.
• Teaching specialism within Plumbing, Electrical Installation or Carpentry & Joinery.
• Relevant Level 3 vocational qualification.
• Level 4 teaching qualification ideally, with Level 5 advantageous.
• Strong understanding of teaching, learning and assessment.
• Experience improving learner outcomes, retention and curriculum quality.
• Confident managing and developing teaching staff.
• Able to handle difficult conversations and performance issues professionally.
• Knowledge of T Levels beneficial.
• Strong communication, organisation and leadership skills.
• Ambitious to develop provision and support the continued progression of the department.
