Job Title: Head of Software Engineering
UK-based (Remote/Hybrid options available)

Up to £125,000 P/A + benefits!

Are you a visionary leader in Software Engineering with a passion for using technology to improve public services? Do you thrive on shaping high-performing teams and building trusted relationships with senior stakeholders? If so, I’d love to hear from you.
I’m working with a technology consultancy that partners with the UK public sector to deliver meaningful change through digital transformation. SR2 have been engaged to support the search for a Head of Software Engineering to lead and grow the Software Engineering practice—someone who’s equally at home discussing forward-thinking architectures as they are coaching delivery teams and engaging clients at C-level.

About the Role
As the Head of Software Engineering, you’ll play a pivotal role in driving the strategy, growth, and delivery excellence of the software practice. You’ll be responsible for:

• Shaping and scaling a high-impact Software Engineering practice
• Developing compelling, problem-focused solutions for public sector clients
• Building and nurturing relationships with senior decision-makers across government departments
• Ensuring quality, innovation, and best practice across all client engagements
• Acting as a thought leader, helping our clients and teams navigate legacy transformation, modern software delivery, and integrated solutions
• Delivering a profitable, scalable and client-centric practice

You'll also work closely with peers across Cloud, Data & AI, Cyber, Architecture, and Enterprise Systems to develop holistic solutions that meet the evolving needs of their clients.

What You’ll Bring
Client-Side Experience

• Deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the UK public sector
• Proven ability to design and deliver solutions that improve services, reduce costs, and meet user needs
• Strong track record in building long-term, trusted relationships with public sector stakeholders

Leadership

• Experience building and leading high-performing engineering and consulting teams
• Strong commercial acumen with experience owning a P&L or cost centre
• Ability to create a thriving culture of innovation, accountability and delivery excellence

Technical Expertise

• Background in modern software engineering practices and legacy system transformation
• In-depth understanding of software development in complex, regulated environments
• Ability to set technical strategy and guide teams delivering multi-disciplinary projects

Consulting & Practice Building

• Experience developing go-to-market strategies and service propositions
• Comfortable working across bids, sales, and client engagement
• Strong understanding of how digital and data services can transform public services
