A growing consumer business in Greater London seeks a Head of Payroll to oversee payroll processing for around 2,000 employees. This position involves managing the payroll team, ensuring compliance with UK legislation, and providing expert payroll advice. Ideal candidates will have significant payroll experience, preferably with high-volume payroll systems. The role offers flexibility with a hybrid work arrangement (3 days in office, 2 days remote). Responsibilities

  • Management and processing of monthly payroll to maintain compliance.
  • Ensure statutory payroll requirements are met.
  • Provide payroll advisory service for process improvement.
  • Collaborate with People Services & Finance to implement initiatives and deliver payroll reports.
  • Advise on all payroll and pension-related matters with key stakeholders.
  • Calculate payroll taxes, attachments of earnings, and liaise with HMRC and third parties.
  • Audit payroll data for government regulation compliance and UK legislation.
  • Develop and refine payroll procedures; calculate commissions, overtime, and bonuses using Excel.
  • Run monthly salary reports and analyse pay trends.
  • Develop and coach the payroll advisor through development opportunities.

Job description

Mapped Recruitment is delighted to be partnering with a well-established and growing consumer business on their hire for a Head of Payroll to join their team.

This position will report directly to the Head of HR, having full ownership of the UK payroll processing and compliance for circa 2,000 employees, as well as managing a lean payroll team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Management, processing, and reconciliation of monthly payroll to maintain compliance with contractual and statutory obligations and ensure accuracy to include year-end processes (P11D and P60)
  • Ensuring all statutory requirements are met, including tax year-end, P11d, Class 1A, PSA
  • Manage a proactive payroll advisory service, working closely with the payroll team, business and People team to improve processes and procedures, including responding to enquiries from employees and stakeholders in a timely and accurate manner
  • Work cross-functionally with People Services & Finance to implement business initiatives and support payroll reconciliations and the delivery of payroll reports
  • Provision of advice on all payroll and pension-related matters, working with key stakeholders
  • Calculation, payment and reconciliation of payroll taxes, Attachment of Earnings & liaising with HMRC and third parties regarding payroll deductions.
  • Checking and auditing the validity of payroll data in line with government regulations and keeping informed with UK legislation.
  • Developing and refining existing payroll procedures.
  • Calculate commission, overtime and bonus pay using Excel
  • Run monthly salary reports, including identifying and analysing pay trends
  • Manage and develop the payroll advisor by identifying development requirements and providing/creating training opportunities
Key Requirements:
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of payroll experience, including leadership responsibilities
  • Experience of owning a high-volume payroll (1,000 + employees)
  • Experience dealing with a retail payroll will be highly advantageous (commissions, variable pay)
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills to work with internal and external stakeholders
  • Exceptional attention to detail

This is a hybrid role based in a centrally located London area (commutable from various areas outside of London). 3 days in the office and 2 days at home
