The school is located in central location making it easily accessible - pupils commute from across the city, supported by excellent public transport links, including numerous bus routes and proximity to Baker Street station.
The school is seeking an inspirational and well-qualified Head of Mathematics to start in September 2027.
This post would suit a committed and reflective teacher who is keen to support and develop others, lead by example, and help shape the future direction of Mathematics across the school. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of Mathematics teaching and learning, be open to exploring different approaches in the classroom, and keep up to date with curriculum developments.
There are currently seven teachers in the Mathematics Department. One of the teachers will support the Head of Mathematics as a Second in Department and another is KS3 Lead. One Mathematics teacher’s primary role is Assistant Head.
Mathematics is a popular subject in this academically selective school, with a significant number of students opting to study Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A Level. In addition, we have 40 students in the Fifth Form (Year 11) who are working towards the Level 2 Further Mathematics Qualification.
The successful candidate will have the ability to teach mathematics throughout the school, from Year 7 to Year 13. The ability to teach Further Mathematics would be an advantage but is not essential. The candidate should have a keen and informed interest in mathematics pedagogy, a willingness to explore different teaching styles and an up-to-date knowledge of current curriculum changes to both the AQA GCSE and Edexcel A Level. They will play an important role in maintaining high standards and enthusiasm for Mathematics.
The department is responsible for several Mathematics related co-curricular activities. Co-curricular enrichment by the department includes the UK Mathematics Team Challenges and National Cipher Challenge. Additionally, the best mathematicians in the school annually attend a Mathematics Varsity Competition, and Sixth Formers participate in the enrichment offered by the Maths Inspiration Programme. All FHS staff are encouraged to be involved with at least one co-curricular club, beyond curriculum time. Currently the department runs a Junior Maths Club, Senior Maths Club, Curiosity Club and Chess Club at lunchtime.
