Job description

Head of Legal – UK Commercial Risk

The candidate will lead the team responsible for supporting the Commercial Risk Insurance broking business and the Global Broking Centre wholesale business across the UK, including UK branches of Belgium and Netherlands.

The role involves leading, advising, and working closely with business leaders and legal experts to anticipate, identify, and manage business, legal, and compliance challenges, helping achieve Aon’s strategic and financial goals.

They will oversee interactions with clients, markets, regulatory bodies, industry bodies, distribution partners, and external counsel.

Required experience includes strong background in broking within the London market and extensive cross-border business experience. The candidate must lead across geographies and solution lines, collaborating with the UK Aon law team based in London, Manchester, and Poland.

What the day will look like
  1. Legal support and risk management: Provide quality commercial legal support and risk guidance to UK Commercial Risk, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and policies. Support other UK businesses as needed.
  2. Relationship building: Build strong relationships with UK Commercial Risk and GBC leaders, acting as a true business partner.
  3. Corporate governance: Advise on regional corporate governance, including board and committee structures, working closely with Compliance.
  4. Team leadership: Lead and support junior team members, fostering engagement and career development within the Law and Compliance Department’s operating model.
  5. Legal risk management: Proactively identify legal risks and work with the business to manage them effectively.
  6. External counsel management: Liaise with outside counsel to ensure compliance and cost-effectiveness.
  7. Project support: Assist with projects related to process improvements, risk mitigation, and legal policy development.
  8. Collaboration: Collaborate across Aon to drive initiatives and embody core values.
  9. Additional duties: Perform other responsibilities as needed.
  10. People leadership: Ensure the UK Commercial Risk legal team is well-structured, efficient, and responsive, supporting career development.
  11. Reporting: Report to Law leadership on key matters and collaboration.
  12. Scope: Support all Aon business lines, including reinsurance, retirement, investment, and analytics, with opportunities for growth and influence.
Skills and experience that will lead to success
  • Qualified to practice law in the UK with a valid practicing certificate.
  • Strong understanding of the London market and UK financial services regulation.
  • Experience in delivering high-quality results in a commercial legal environment, with skills in drafting, negotiation, and communication.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with business, compliance, and legal teams.
  • Proven leadership in managing legal teams, fostering a team-oriented environment, and motivating colleagues.
