Role: Head of Engineering / Director

Location: UK Remote

Bonus: 20-25%

Funding: Series C

Wedo is partnering with a B Corp-certified FinTech, a leader in providing unsecured working capital loans. Using proprietary machine learning, they assess client risk and affordability, enabling consistently high repayment rates without the need for collateral. Their services are accessible via mobile money platforms, catering to both smartphones and feature phones for broad accessibility.

To date, they've disbursed over 5 million loans, positively impacting over 4.1 million people.

Operating with a lean team of 60 across Tech, Data, and Operations, the company is led by their CTO. They are now seeking a Director of Engineering to provide strategic leadership in overseeing all engineering disciplines and driving technical and operational excellence.

This pivotal role will involve leading and developing senior engineering leaders (Heads of Backend, Frontend, Mobile, Testing, and Principal Architect), setting technical strategy aligned with business goals, and ensuring the successful delivery and operation of robust, scalable platforms, including their core lending engine. The Director will also act as a key deputy to the CTO when needed.

The role is critical as they expand into new markets, secure Series D funding, and work towards an IPO in the coming years.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Engineering Leader with the following qualifications:

• Leadership & Mentorship: Proven ability to lead, manage, mentor, and inspire senior engineering managers and technical leaders (a "leader of leaders").
• Strategic Vision: Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate business goals into actionable technical strategies and roadmaps.
• Team Management: Demonstrable experience in scaling and managing diverse, high-performing teams.
• Engineering & FinTech Expertise: In-depth knowledge of modern software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Kanban), architectural patterns (Microservices, Event-Driven), operational excellence (DevOps, SRE), and managing the full SDLC at scale.
• FinTech Landscape: A solid understanding of the banking, payments, and fintech landscape, including relevant technologies, regulatory considerations, and common challenges.
• Technical Credibility: While not a hands-on coding role, you must possess sufficient technical knowledge across key areas (e.g., backend systems, cloud infrastructure, APIs, data, security, mobile, web) to effectively guide technical discussions, challenge assumptions, and make informed decisions.
• Executive Communication & Influence: Experience in both strategic (long-term vision, planning, budgeting) and operational (execution oversight, delivery management, incident response coordination) levels. Strong problem-solving skills and data-driven decision-making abilities.
• Metrics & Performance: Experience using metrics (e.g., DORA, quality metrics) to drive improvements and ensure high-performance standards.

Your Proven Track Record:

• Demonstrated success in a Head of Engineering or equivalent senior engineering leadership role (e.g., VP Engineering, Senior Director of Engineering), preferably within a high-growth fintech, banking, or payments company.
