Job summary

IES Utilities Group Ltd in Manchester is seeking a Head of Design to establish and lead the in-house Design Department, ensuring safe, compliant delivery of multi-disciplinary designs for gas, water, and power projects.

You will provide technical leadership, governance, and client confidence, manage the CAD team, align standards with IGEM/BS EN, and drive pre-construction design coordination and value-for-money design solutions.

Qualifications

Chartered Engineer (or working towards) in Civil/Mechanical/Electrical/Process
Proven track record in utilities/infrastructure design (gas, water, power)
Experience delivering design within EPC or D&B project environments

Responsibilities

Establish the Design Department and define its scope, processes and standards.
Lead and develop line management of multi-disciplinary design engineers and CAD team.
Chair design reviews, HAZOPs, and technical assurance meetings.
Act as Principal Designer under CDM where required, and ensure design risk registers are embedded.
Support bids by scoping design solutions and estimating design effort.
Build a multi-discipline pre-construction Design Co-ordination team as the business grows
