Job description

As Head of Community Editorial, you will lead a team of Community Editors who champion the experiences and perspectives of our readers. You will ensure that our readers’ voices are heard prominently throughout the Telegraph’s journalism, on the app and website, in podcasts, videos, and in print. You will oversee our community editorial strategy and work closely with the Head of Community to develop new products and initiatives that foster subscriber loyalty and retention.

The Community team’s mission is to build the strongest reader community among UK media publishers, support subscriber loyalty and retention, and contribute to the Telegraph’s wider subscriber growth ambitions.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop, own, and oversee the implementation of the Community team’s editorial and community strategies in line with the Telegraph’s ambitions for subscriber growth.
  2. Lead and manage the Deputy Head of Community Editorial and Community Editors.
  3. Foster closer relationships and increased engagement between journalists and readers to support loyalty and retention.
  4. Oversee the team’s editorial output and community activities, ensuring they meet quality and style standards.
  5. Lead editorial forward planning for major events.
  6. Contribute to editorial products and initiatives impacting commenters and communities, liaising with external suppliers as needed.
  7. Establish and document best practices for editorial community products and initiatives.
  8. Use data and insights to inform journalism and editorial decisions.
  9. Demonstrate strong leadership skills with knowledge of the news agenda and current affairs.
  10. Experience in writing, commissioning, editing, or publishing engaging editorial content across multiple formats and platforms.
  11. Maintain excellent editorial judgment and understanding of media law as it applies to journalism.
  12. Have a deep understanding of The Telegraph’s subscribers, brands, and journalistic values.
  13. Proven ability to collaborate, build relationships, and communicate effectively with stakeholders and departments.
  14. Be proactive and enthusiastic in initiating and executing projects.
  15. Experience in building and growing successful online communities.
  16. Good knowledge of digital publishing landscape and emerging media trends.
  17. Working knowledge of publishing and workflow tools.
  18. Ability to use analytics tools and data reports to guide editorial decisions and performance improvements.
