Job summary

Buxted Medical Centre in East Sussex is seeking a compassionate Healthcare Assistant to join our General Practice team. You will support nursing staff, carry out phlebotomy, blood pressure checks, ECGs, health checks and vaccinations where trained, and help with chronic disease management.

Working under GPs, you will deliver high-quality care and contribute to patient experience, maintaining safety and IPC guidelines while supporting administration as needed.

Qualifications

• Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or equivalent.
• HCA Care Certificate completed or in progress.
• Phlebotomy certification preferred.
• Experience in a primary care setting is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Undertake new patient health checks.
• Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes.
• Carry out baseline observations e.g. BP, pulse, temperature, SpO2.
• Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring.
• Undertake wound care, dressings and related tasks as required.
• Support chronic disease management clinics.
• Record accurate clinical notes and measurements.
• Chaperone patients as required.
• Carry out venepuncture and assist with vaccinations when trained.

Job summary

We are looking for a compassionate and motivated Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our friendly and supportive General Practice team. As an HCA in a GP setting, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care and supporting the clinical team in the day-to-day running of the practice.

Working under the guidance of the nursing team and GPs, you will carry out a range of clinical tasks such as phlebotomy, blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, health checks, vaccinations (if trained), and assisting with chronic disease management. You will also contribute to the overall patient experience by providing reassurance, health promotion advice, and practical support throughout their visit.

This role is ideal for someone with previous HCA experience, preferably in primary care or community health, who is enthusiastic, organised, and committed to making a difference in the lives of patients.

Main duties of the job

To support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education whilst also supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis.

We are a busy, friendly, and expanding three-partner practice, currently caring for a population of approximately 16,000 patients across our dispensing sites. To support our growing services, we are looking to recruit a dedicated HCA to join our experienced clinical team, working flexibly across our sites.

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

• Undertake new patient health checks
• Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
• Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately
• Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
• Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
• Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
• Carry out BMI checks as directed
• Act as a chaperone as required
• Undertake venepuncture
• When trained, administer flu vaccinations
• When trained, carry out ear irrigation under the supervision of the practice nurse
• Carry out ECGs as requested
• Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
• Provide support during minor operations as required
• Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
• Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance
• Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy
• Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate

• Previous completion of the HCA Care Certificate
