Position Overview

This position is based at our UK Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences in Ashford, Kent. As a Hardware Systems Engineer, you will focus on product design and development of new imaging and sighting systems for Aerospace & Defence and Life Science sectors. Your responsibilities will include electronics and firmware design of products from concept through to production, considering requirements, timelines, costs, and regulatory constraints. You will collaborate with colleagues across the business, including product management and business development, to support new commercial opportunities and operations, facilitating technology transfer to manufacturing. This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary team working on cutting-edge products such as laser directed energy weapons, multi-band sighting systems for situational awareness, and advanced medical imaging, all aimed at driving revenue growth.

Main Duties
  1. Lead development of electronic solutions for electro-optical products using FPGA, digital, and analogue hardware and software.
  2. Provide electronic systems engineering input from concept to manufacturing and testing.
  3. Assist with requirements capture, specification definition, sensitivity analysis, and reliability analysis.
  4. Perform electronic design, analysis, and testing as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  5. Prepare high-standard presentations and reports for all project phases.
  6. Support handover processes from design to production.
  7. Collaborate with Business Development and Engineering teams to support new opportunities and develop solutions for customers.
  8. Drive products from design through prototyping to environmental qualification following internal or customer-driven NPI.
Ideal Candidates Will Have
  • Degree qualification (2:1 or higher)
  • Knowledge of digital and analogue signal processing
  • Experience in analogue electronics design
  • Skills in schematic capture and layout
  • Ability to create and maintain technical documentation, including specifications, manuals, and user instructions
  • Ability to present to customers and partners
  • Experience across the full design lifecycle, from initial negotiations to requirements capture, subsystem design, hardware testing, and integration
  • Ability to work independently
Desirable Skills
  • Firmware development experience in C, C++, C#, Python
  • Understanding of qualification standards (e.g., MIL, STANAG, ESCC/ECSS)
  • Knowledge in digital and analogue video processing
