Job description

Hardware Intern 27/28 Winter

Motion Metrics Ltd. London, England, United Kingdom

About this position

We are looking for a hardware intern to help in a variety of roles across the business. This role is perfect for someone who is technically talented, but who also wants to experience the many different parts of a startup and to travel and work abroad.

Previous interns have designed and tested prototype hardware on snow, supervised our manufacturing lines in China, and designed parts of the Carv hardware manufactured at 100k+ volumes.

About Carv and Motion Metrics

Motion Metrics is a London-based, sports technology scale‑up with offices in London (UK) and Innsbruck (Austria). Our product is Carv, the world's first digital ski coach. We recently launched Carv 2, a compact sensor that clips onto the strap of each ski boot in seconds. It captures high-resolution motion data using a 6-axis gyroscope and accelerometer. The data is then sent via Bluetooth to the Carv app, which analyses your skiing technique and provides real‑time, personalised coaching through your headphones.

Carv can transform ski technique by providing one‑on‑one coaching for each day of skiing and uses data from thousands of athletes to improve individual technique in interactive and effective ways. Carv pioneers a new type of sports‑wearable device, offering teaching and coaching within the sports‑tech industry.

This is an outstanding opportunity to work in a fast‑growing, VC‑backed sports‑technology start‑up in London, alongside a fantastic team of operations and marketing experts, hardware and software engineers, all passionate about changing the paradigm of coaching.

About the role

Successful applicants will divide their time between two locations as follows:

  • Innsbruck: During the peak of the season (November–April) you will work 3–4 months from our office in Innsbruck. You will be provided with accommodation in our company flat, with easy access to various resorts. You will support the customer‑success team to identify, debug and analyse hardware issues with units in use, and reproduce them on the slopes.
  • London: Before and after the season you will work from our London HQ to optimise manufacturing of existing hardware and test future design iterations, with support from the wider hardware team. You will collaborate with product, operations and marketing teams, and may gain insight into other areas through project work.

Travel to Shenzhen, China may also be required depending on business needs and for a period of up to one month.

Your main responsibilities
  • Become a design wizard and build test fixtures, prototype hardware, and improvements to our manufacturing process.
  • Run in‑depth tests on the Carv hardware to help continue improving the product.
  • Identify and diagnose issues arising during production, and work with our factories to resolve them.
  • Train the customer‑success team to identify and debug issues with units in use.
  • Use Python and SQL to interface with our database and build automation tools to streamline debugging.
  • Analyse data from returned hardware to identify root causes and propose solutions.
  • Manage prototype testing with our global user base.
  • Ski test and debug prototypes in Innsbruck.
Our candidate is someone who
  • Will graduate in 2026 with a degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or similar) and has excellent academic results, or proven knowledge and experience in a similar role.
  • Has previous experience working in industry.
  • Has a very strong grasp of the fundamentals of mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Combines analytical skills and attention to detail with natural engineering intuition.
  • Can operate autonomously and is highly self‑motivated to learn and solve problems.
  • Has great communication skills and a real empathy for customers and colleagues.
Nice to have
  • Experience in Python, SQL, or software development more generally.
  • Experience designing and building mechanical prototypes using CAD software such as Solidworks, Onshape, or Creo.
  • General workshop skills and knowledge in proper use of hand tools and machine tools.
  • Experience writing firmware for microcontrollers such as ESP32s.
  • Experience evaluating ICs and designing and testing PCBs.
Benefits
  • Salary: London Living Wage.
  • Subsidised accommodation in the company flat in Innsbruck.
  • Innsbruck ski pass for the duration of the season.
  • Two return flights between Innsbruck and London.
Duration

The internship will last between 7–10 months, dependent on aptitude and experience. The internship will start at the latest in October 2027, with the potential for an earlier start depending on business needs.

Applications

Please submit your CV, a short cover letter, and a brief description of your skiing experience. Include any relevant technical or internship experience. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
