Job summary

US Mobile is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer in the UK to lead a backend pod while staying hands-on in coding and architecture. You will hire, mentor, and grow a high-performing team as the company scales toward tens of millions of customers and devices.

You’ll shape technical direction, build reliable REST APIs with Java/Spring Boot or Python, and collaborate across Product, QA, and DevOps to deliver scalable features with strong engineering standards.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of backend experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
• Proven track record leading backend teams and hiring.
• Experience building scalable REST APIs and async services.
• Hands-on with RabbitMQ or AWS SQS/SNS messaging.
• NoSQL experience with MongoDB and data modeling.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and workflows.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a backend engineering team, with hiring and performance management.
• Shape architectural direction and align with product roadmaps.
• Write code and review architecture as a hands-on contributor.
• Ensure reliability, scalability, and high availability of services.
• Collaborate with Product, QA, and DevOps to deliver features.
• Mentor engineers and drive engineering standards across the org.
