Job summary

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a Band 5 Registered Nurse to join the Gynaecology Outpatients team, with a focus on supporting the colposcopy service. You will work with colposcopists, nurses and healthcare assistants to provide safe, compassionate care to women and people with a cervix who are anxious about abnormal screening results.

Key duties include assisting during examinations and biopsies, welcoming patients, providing emotional support, managing histology/cytology

Qualifications

• Band 5 Registered Nurse position in Gynaecology Outpatients.
• Support the colposcopy service and work with colposcopists, nurses and healthcare assistants.
• Assist during examinations, treatments and biopsies, including preparing equipment.
• Welcome and prepare patients, explain procedures clearly and answer questions.
• Provide emotional support, act as chaperone and patient advocate.
• Handle histology and cytology specimens according to local policy.
• Provide aftercare advice and written information about biopsy or treatment.
• Support general gynaecology outpatient care, including postmenopausal bleeding, hysteroscopy and pessary clinics.
• Carry out observations, urinalysis, pregnancy tests and other point-of-care checks.
• Recognise deteriorating or unwell patients promptly.

Responsibilities

• Assist the colposcopist during examinations, treatments and biopsies, including preparing equipment, solutions and instruments.
• Welcome and prepare patients, explaining the procedure clearly and answering questions.
• Provide emotional support and reassurance, acting as chaperone and patient advocate throughout.
• Support informed consent by checking understanding and escalating any concerns.
• Handle, label and send histology and cytology specimens accurately, in line with local policy.
• Provide aftercare advice and written information, including what to expect after biopsy or treatment and when to seek help.
