Background

Northern & Shell is a pioneering group that became a significant force in British and worldwide media, with a major UK television broadcaster alongside a portfolio of national newspapers and celebrity magazines. Following the sale of Channel 5 to Viacom in 2014 and its print publications to Trinity Mirror plc (since renamed Reach plc) in 2018, the group completed its transition from its core of media businesses to focus on property development, with the creation of the Westferry printworks property development project, and lotteries, in addition to other ventures.

The Westferry property development will be a vibrant new waterfront neighbourhood for London, near Canary Wharf. It will provide around 1,400 new homes, parks, a 1,200 space secondary school, sports facilities, a mix of independent retailers, restaurants and bars, a community centre, a crèche and healthcare facilities - with a sense of neighbourhood at its heart.

The Health Lottery launched in October 2011 and raises money to support local health related good causes throughout Great Britain. Since launch, the lottery has raised more than £134 million and directly improved the lives of more than 769,000 people across Great Britain.

The group also has a venture capital arm, focussing on innovative companies, helping them to reach a high level of market maturity and builds on expertise within the media industry to offer media-for-revenue and media-for-equity business models that give companies advertising in return for revenue-sharing or equity. Working with companies in the early stages of development, Northern & Shell Ventures has created a wide portfolio of interests, including Cheeky Panda and ffs Beauty.

The group is well resourced with net assets in excess of £400 million, including a portfolio of current asset investments under management, and is well placed to build on its established activities and new opportunities as they arise.

The role

The role involves working at a senior level across the Northern & Shell group, reporting into the Group Finance Director, with exposure across the business and up to board level.

This represents an excellent opportunity for a newly qualified accountant from a practice background that wants to gain some commercial exposure in a dynamic and fast paced environment. Providing a key role in supporting the finance function as the group repositions itself for its next phase of growth and development.

Key responsibilities

• Preparation of annual group consolidation and group statutory accounts
• Preparation and co-ordination of annual statutory accounts across the group
• Manage the year end reporting cycle and audit process across the group, as a key audit contact. Liaising with the group finance function and non-financial staff across the business
• Preparation of group tax computations and supporting schedules for review by Group Finance Director
• Review and maintain strong financial controls and procedures across the business, including review of monthly balance sheet reconciliations
• Monthly reconciliation of current asset investments, including capital gain calculations for disposals
• Preparation of investment property quarterly management accounts, including preparation of annual statutory accounts
• Oversee group intercompany reconciliations, including intercompany loan and interest schedules
• Ad hoc assistance with accounting and technical issues across the group, providing support for the wider finance teams and for non-financial staff
• Provide support to accounts payable, accounts receivable and treasury functions
• Provide support for any group VAT matters
• Monthly preparation and submission of CIS returns, including liaising with the external development manager with any queries on payments and costs relating to the property development
• Manage and maintain strong statutory reporting and compliance procedures to ensure all statutory reporting deadlines are met on a timely basis
• Supporting the Group Finance Director and Commercial Director on ad hoc group projects, including the implementation and accounting for group reorganisations, balance sheet tidy ups and liquidations etc. Liaising with advisors and other key contacts on a project-by-project basis as necessary
• Ad hoc projects.
• ACA/ACCA qualified (with a practice background preferable)
• Technically proficient
• A self-starter, with an ability to use own initiative and work unsupervised
• Team player with good communication skills
• Not afraid to gets hands dirty and get out into the business
• Organised and an ability to meet tight deadlines
• A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and competency with financial reporting/accounts preparation software. Experience of Xero, Peoplesoft, CCH (statutory accounts preparation) and Onesource (tax software) preferable but not essential.
