Job summary

Smiths (Gloucester) Ltd, a family-run group active across the South-West, is seeking a Groundworks Site Manager to lead groundworks and civil engineering operations on construction sites. You will oversee site preparation, drainage, foundations, and external works to meet safety, budget, and quality targets.

The role requires strong leadership, site management experience, and relevant certifications (SMSTS, CSCS, First Aid).

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Site Manager in groundworks/civil engineering (3–5 years).
• SMSTS certification required.
• CSCS card (Black/Gold/White preferred).
• First Aid at Work certificate required.

Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day site operations, ensuring work is carried out safely, efficiently, and to project specifications.
• Coordinate and supervise subcontractors, site operatives, plant, and materials.
• Quantify materials from site drawings and place material requisitions.
• Interpret technical drawings and plans to guide the work on-site.
• Proactively raise RFIs.
• Ensure groundwork elements are delivered to specification and QA records are up to date.
• Maintain daily records of site activity and progress.
• Monitor health and safety compliance; carry out toolbox talks, inductions and risk assessments.
• Liaise with clients, contracts managers, engineers, and senior management for updates and issue resolution.
• Manage site logistics, including deliveries, material handling, and waste disposal.
• Ensure plant and machinery are used correctly and maintained.
