Job description

Milk Education are working with a welcoming secondary school in Bolton who are seeking an enthusiastic and caring Graduate Teaching Assistant to join their team ASAP.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate looking to gain valuable, hands-on experience in a secondary school setting before progressing into teacher training, further study or a career working with children and young people.

The school welcomes applications from graduates with degrees in relevant subjects including Psychology, Education Studies, Sociology, English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Childhood Studies, Special Educational Needs (SEN), Youth Work and other related disciplines.

The role would suit someone who is passionate about young people's development and education and keen to build their classroom, communication and interpersonal skills.

Previous school experience is desirable but not essential. Experience in tutoring, mentoring, coaching, childcare, youth work, volunteering, sports, community work or working with young people would be beneficial.

About the Role

As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support teachers with lessons and learning activities across the secondary curriculum
  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils
  • Help pupils develop their literacy, numeracy and wider learning skills
  • Support pupils with classwork, activities and targeted interventions
  • Encourage pupils' confidence, independence and motivation
  • Support pupils who require additional academic, emotional or pastoral guidance
  • Assist with classroom activities, preparation and learning resources
  • Help create an engaging, inclusive and positive learning environment
  • Build strong and positive relationships with pupils
  • Encourage positive behaviour and support classroom routinesWork alongside teachers, SEN staff, pastoral staff and the wider school team
  • Support pupils' social and emotional development
  • Help pupils develop communication, confidence and independence
  • Support pupil wellbeing and follow safeguarding procedures
What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold a degree in a relevant subject such as Psychology, Education Studies, Sociology, English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Childhood Studies, SEN or Youth Work
  • Have a genuine interest in young people's learning, development and wellbeing
  • Be considering a career in secondary teaching, education, psychology, child development, SEN or a related field
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be enthusiastic, approachable and confident working with young people
  • Be patient, caring and able to adapt to the needs of different learners
  • Have an understanding of young people's development and the factors that can influence learning
  • Be reliable, proactive and willing to learn
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a wider school team
  • Understand the importance of safeguarding and child protection

Previous school experience is not essential. Graduates with relevant transferable experience are encouraged to apply.

Experience working with young people through tutoring, mentoring, youth work, sports coaching, volunteering, childcare, community programmes or other relevant settings would be particularly beneficial.
