Job description

The opportunity

Combat Fire is seeking a motivated graduate engineer to join our specialist fire-suppression team. This is an excellent opportunity to develop a career in the design and estimation of high-pressure water-mist and gaseous fire-extinguishing systems.

You will receive structured technical training and work alongside experienced engineers on commercial and industrial projects. The role combines engineering design, technical calculations, product selection and cost estimation, providing experience across the complete project lifecycle.

No previous fire-protection experience is required. We are looking for a capable graduate with strong technical fundamentals, commercial awareness and a willingness to learn.

Key responsibilities
  • Review drawings, specifications, fire strategies and customer enquiries.
  • Help design water-mist and gaseous extinguishing systems.
  • Prepare equipment schedules, system layouts and technical proposals.
  • Undertake hydraulic, pipework, electrical and system-capacity calculations.
  • Select suitable pumps, cylinders, nozzles, valves, detection and control equipment.
  • Produce accurate material take-offs and cost estimates.
  • Obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Prepare professional quotations, tenders and technical submissions.
  • Liaise with customers, consultants, suppliers and Combat Fire's project engineers.
  • Attend surveys and project meetings when required.
  • Maintain estimating records, pricing information and project documentation.
  • Develop an understanding of relevant British, European and international fire-protection standards.
  • Support projects from initial enquiry through design, installation and commissioning.
What we are looking for

Applicants should have, or be completing, a degree or higher-level qualification in a relevant subject, such as:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Electrical or electronic engineering
  • Building services engineering
  • Fire engineering
  • Chemical or process engineering
  • Construction, quantity surveying or a related technical discipline

You should also have:

  • A logical and methodical approach to technical problems.
  • Confidence working with calculations, specifications and drawings.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Competence with Microsoft Excel and other standard office software.
  • An interest in combining engineering with commercial estimating.
  • The ability to manage several enquiries and meet deadlines.
  • A full UK driving licence, or the ability to obtain one within a reasonable period.

Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, hydraulic calculations, estimating software or fire-protection systems would be helpful, but it is not essential.

Training and development

Combat Fire will provide practical training in:

  • High-pressure water-mist system design
  • Gaseous and inert-gas extinguishing systems
  • Fire detection and extinguishing-control systems
  • Hydraulic and system-sizing calculations
  • Relevant codes, standards and certification requirements
  • Surveying and interpreting technical drawings
  • Estimating, pricing and tender preparation
  • Project delivery, installation and commissioning

As your knowledge develops, you will take greater responsibility for complete system designs and commercial proposals. The role offers a clear route towards becoming a Design Engineer, Estimator, Project Engineer or Technical Sales Engineer.

Why join Combat Fire?
  • Work in a specialist and technically demanding engineering sector.
  • Receive direct training from experienced fire-suppression professionals.
  • Contribute to real projects from an early stage.
  • Gain experience of both engineering design and commercial decision-making.
  • Work with advanced water-mist, gaseous extinguishing, detection and control technologies.
  • Develop valuable expertise in life-safety systems and regulatory compliance.
  • Build a long-term career within a growing specialist business.
Personal qualities
  • Curious and keen to understand how systems work
  • Numerate and comfortable solving engineering problems
  • Organised, reliable and attentive to detail
  • Confident asking questions and learning from experienced colleagues
  • Able to communicate technical information clearly
  • Commercially aware without compromising engineering quality or safety
