Job description

A Future with purpose

At Arup, we’re dedicated to sustainable development and to doing socially useful work that has meaning. Our purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach have set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

We solve the world's most complex problems and deliver what seems impossible. We explore challenges with curiosity and creativity—using technology, imagination, and rigor to deliver remarkable outcomes.

The Opportunity

A career in any of our UK Bridge and Civil Structures teams provides an exciting and rewarding environment in which to work and develop. We are a diverse company collaborating on and delivering a wide range of projects of all scales across transport, renewable energy, and water sectors, throughout the UK and globally. We support our clients and solve their challenges as they transition to a net-zero economy and address climate change impacts, delivering sustainable design and asset life extension for civil engineering structures, bridges, and tunnels. We are involved in many major infrastructure projects that transform and improve daily lives, from new build designs that complement their environments to strengthening existing assets to sustainably extend their lifespan.

Our portfolio includes exciting UK and international projects in transport, energy, and water sectors. Our clients include government agencies, local authorities, contractors, and developers. We undertake all aspects of bridge design, assessment, construction planning, and structural health monitoring—from pedestrian bridges to long-span cable-supported bridges, such as the New Wear Footbridge, Gull Wing Bridge, Forth Bridge, Transpennine Rail Upgrade, and High Speed 2. We also design tunnel shafts, portals, cut-and-cover tunnels, underground pumping stations, and offshore wind platforms. A career with Arup's Bridges and Civil Structures teams offers opportunities to influence and solve challenging problems in diverse environments.

As the industry rapidly evolves through digital technology, we aim to be a leading digital consultancy in the built environment. In Bridges and Civil Structures, this involves pioneering use of 3D solid modelling, automation tools, coding, databases, data analytics, and AI. We seek candidates with an aptitude and interest in developing skills in these areas alongside traditional engineering expertise.

From day one, you'll join a community of experts, supported in your career development and guided toward professional accreditation. You will help us deliver effective, professional services to high-profile clients. While you will have significant responsibilities from the start, we will support your growth and broaden your understanding.

Is this role right for you?

Skills

  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an ICE or IStructE accredited course
  • Strong numerical, verbal, and written communication skills
  • An analytical mindset and commitment to technical excellence
  • Enthusiasm for bridges and civil structures, with knowledge of sector work
  • Understanding of general bridge and structural behaviour, with the ability to develop practical solutions
  • Drive for technical excellence, creativity, and innovation
  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and responsibly
  • Interest and skills in digital areas such as coding for automation and problem-solving is an advantage

We seek curious individuals eager to evolve their thinking and working methods. Our strength lies in respecting, sharing, and connecting diverse experiences and ideas. At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective that encourages individuality. If you can share your knowledge, inspire others, and deliver excellent client services, we want to hear from you.

You should be able to start this opportunity in September 2025.
