Job summary

• JCPTGP or MRCGP or equivalent Vocational Training Certificate.

Responsibilities

• Surgery and telephone consultations, with a mix of face-to-face and remote appointments.
• Visiting patients at home.
• Assess undiagnosed problems and make autonomous decisions for self-referred and referred patients.
• Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
• Develop care plans in line with practice disease management protocols.
• Provide counselling and health education.
• Refer patients to other care providers.
• Prepare and issue computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions; manage formulary.
• Check and sign repeat prescriptions and respond to queries.
• Record clear consultation notes, reports and correspondence.
• Collect audit data, meet QOF requirements and deliver enhanced services.

Job description

Fixed-term locum GP post covering maternity leave for six months from December 2026 at Bersted Green Surgery, a teaching practice. The work centres on surgery and telephone consultations, repeat and acute prescribing, care planning and audit, with most home visits handled by the paramedic team. Sessions run Tuesday to Friday, five to seven a week, with 15-minute appointments and about 13 patients per session. Any career stage is welcome, including newly qualified GPs, provided they are qualified and on the performers list.

What the job involves

• Surgery and telephone consultations, mixing face-to-face and remote appointments
• Visiting patients at home
• Assessing undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems and making autonomous decisions on self-referred and referred patients
• Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness
• Developing care plans with patients in line with practice disease management protocols
• Providing counselling and health education
• Referring patients to other care providers
• Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions, prescribing from the formulary or generically where appropriate
• Checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries
• Recording clear, timely consultation notes, paperwork, reports and correspondence
• Collecting audit data, meeting QOF requirements and delivering enhanced services

Qualifications

• Vocational Training Certificate or equivalent (JCPTGP, MRCGP)
