Job Description:

Governance & Regulatory Lawyer – Permanent Opportunity

Working Arrangement: Hybrid working – office attendance typically 1 day per week

Salary: £49,000 to £56,000 per annum

Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Governance & Regulatory Lawyer to join a dynamic and well-regarded in-house legal team within a major regional public body. This role offers exposure to a broad range of public law disciplines with a particular focus on employment law, litigation, regulatory and governance matters.

About the Role

Working within a well-regarded in-house team, you will provide advice across a broad portfolio of regulatory and governance matters. You’ll play a key role in ensuring legal compliance, supporting decision-making, and advising on complex legal issues that impact strategic projects across the region.

Areas of Work Include:

  • Employment law: contracts, TUPE, disciplinaries, redundancies, and organisational change
  • Governance: committee arrangements, officer delegations, ethical standards, and constitutional matters
  • Regulatory and compliance matters
  • Litigation, including debt recovery and civil claims
  • Information governance and data protection
  • Equalities law and the Public Sector Equality Duty
  • Devolution-related legal work and joint arrangements with other authorities

Although the balance of work will be influenced by service needs, the team is committed to playing to individuals' strengths and offering opportunities to broaden experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing advice and drafting legal documentation across employment, governance and regulatory matters
  • Supporting decision-making processes and ensuring legal and procedural compliance
  • Working collaboratively across departments and supporting colleagues within the legal team
  • Contributing to ongoing improvement of legal services and resilience through development and training

About You

You will be a qualified solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive entitled to practise in England and Wales. You may have a background in local government, the wider public sector, or relevant private practice experience.

We are especially keen to hear from candidates with strong employment law experience, but welcome applications from those with broader regulatory or litigation expertise and the desire to expand into other areas.

You will also bring:

  • The ability to communicate complex legal advice clearly and confidently
  • A flexible mindset and the willingness to work across multiple legal areas
  • An interest in public sector innovation and a commitment to service excellence
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders

What’s on Offer:

  • 28 days annual leave (plus bank holidays), rising with service
  • Generous public sector pension scheme
  • Free bus and rail travel across West Yorkshire
  • Hybrid and agile working supported by modern tech and flexible policies
  • Access to online training and support for professional development
