Role Overview
The Goods In / Goods Out Operative plays a vital operational role in managing the accurate receipt, handling, storage, packaging, and dispatch of customer equipment, products, and operational goods. Acting as a key point of contact between internal operations, laboratory/engineering teams, suppliers, and external logistics providers, you will ensure all items are correctly identified, traceable, protected, and processed efficiently through the facility.
This role also includes occasional local driving duties to undertake customer collections and deliveries as required.
Key Responsibilities
Core Goods In & Goods Out Operations
- Receipt & Inspection: Receive incoming customer equipment, supplier deliveries, and materials. Check items against delivery documentation, system records, and purchase orders, verifying quantities and condition upon arrival.
- System Logging & Labeling: Accurately record Goods In activity within internal business and management software. Apply status, tracking, and job labels in line with company procedures.
- Traceability & Control: Maintain clear identification, segregation, and traceability of all goods throughout handling, internal routing, storage, and dispatch. Promptly escalating any unidentifiable or missing items.
- Packing & Dispatch: Verify completed orders, select appropriate protective packaging for safe transport, attach accurate courier labels, and coordinate outgoing dispatches.
Collections, Deliveries & Driving
- Customer Logistics: Perform planned and ad-hoc local collections and deliveries of equipment using company vehicles.
- Handling & Custody: Ensure goods collected or delivered are positively identified, safely loaded, correctly secured, and fully protected during transit.
- Documentation & Service: Complete collection/delivery notes, obtain customer sign-offs, and maintain a professional, customer-focused approach as a representative of the company.
Quality, Safety & General Operations
- Health & Safety: Maintain clean, safe, and organized warehouse/stores areas. Follow safe manual handling practices and perform routine pre-use vehicle checks.
- Quality Compliance: Adhere to defined quality management procedures (e.g., ISO 9001 / ISO 17025 standards) to protect customer property from damage or loss.
Candidate Profile & Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- Driving Licence: Full, clean UK Driving Licence (essential for collection/delivery duties).
- Operational Background: Proven experience working in a structured warehouse, stores, logistics, or goods-in/goods-out environment.
- Detail-Oriented: Exceptional attention to detail with strong numerical and literacy skills for accurately reading serial numbers, delivery notes, and system data.
- IT / Computer Literacy: Strong confidence working with business management systems (ERP/WMS) and Microsoft Office applications.
- Physical Capability: Comfortable undertaking manual handling tasks, packaging heavy or sensitive items, and loading/unloading vehicles safely.
Desirable Attributes
Previous experience within a technical, engineering, calibration, or high-value equipment handling environment.
Familiarity with courier booking portals and external logistics management.
Valid Manual Handling or materials-handling/forklift certifications.
