Job summary

The British Museum is seeking an International Touring Exhibitions Curator to develop and co-curate global exhibitions, including Byzantium, within an exciting 12-month fixed-term contract. The role supports scholarly research, public engagement and international collaboration from our Bloomsbury base.

The position is part-time (3.5 days/week), hybrid with at least 2 on-site days weekly in London, and includes travel.

Qualifications

• Experience in a museum environment with curating exhibitions.
• Knowledge of ancient Mediterranean, Egypt or Middle East material culture.
• Ability to translate academic research into engaging public exhibition content.
• Strong research and writing skills for catalogue essays and labels.
• Collaborative approach and ability to build relationships across departments and with international stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Co-curate the Byzantium exhibition and collaborate with curatorial and project colleagues.
• Develop and curate other international touring exhibitions based on ancient world collections.
• Propose new exhibition concepts and identify opportunities for international audiences.
• Build relationships across the Museum and engage colleagues in content development and sourcing objects.
• Research and develop exhibition narratives and catalogue content including object labels and texts.
• Turn complex topics into accessible stories for a broad public audience.
• Coordinate with project colleagues and host venues on designs, interpretation and marketing materials.
• Support exhibitions through presentations, gallery tours, lectures and events.
