Job description

Global Payroll Manager

About us

Network Rail Consulting (NRC) is the international consultancy arm of Network Rail, the owner of Britain's railway, one of the largest rail operations in the world.

We have been active in the Australian, the Middle East and North American markets since 2013 and have successfully delivered over 200 consultancy contracts for government, public and privately owned organisations, and for passenger and freight owners and operators, achieving consistently excellent levels of client satisfaction.

Our work is driven by our values: passion, agility, collaboration, and impartiality.

About the role

We are hiring an experienced Global Payroll Manager for our team in London. In this role, you will manage the payroll processing for complex overseas and shadow payrolls, ensuring our people get paid accurately and on time.

You will work closely with, and report into, a Senior Global Payroll Manager that has responsibility for the overall implementation and delivery of our payroll strategy.

Activities that you will get involved with day to day will be things like:

  • Providing expert advice on complex payroll matters to internal stakeholders.
  • Managing our global payrolls from input and calculation to review and output, reconciling with our HRIS (we use SelectHR) and cost rates file. On occasion, you will be taking the lead on approving all our payrolls.
  • Managing the expatriate liabilities process, liaising with various internal and external stakeholders to maintain compliance and ongoing liabilities like tax and pensions.
  • Taking the lead on managing employment tax related issues and queries with our appointed tax advisors across the globe.
  • Presenting our Payroll Induction Module to new joiners. You will be continually reviewing and amending it in line with statutory changes and our in-house policies.
  • Partnering with the wider HR team on the absence reconciliation process, ensuring correct and accurate data exists across our internal systems.
  • Maintaining and updating Employee Cost Rates file on a weekly basis. Reviewing all inputs of benefits, taxes and employer liabilities. This will include proactively staying up to date with tax changes and implementing changes where necessary.
  • Analysing global people related data, such as absence and compensation reports, from SelectHR to identify and solve discrepancies with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Creating and analysing periodic reports, like employee headcount, to keep key stakeholders informed.
  • Continually improving our payroll functionality, evaluating best practice, and establishing robust procedures and processes.
  • Supporting with strategic payroll projects related to SelectHR. For example, you may undertake User Acceptance Testing to understand the impact of implementing a new feature.
  • Updating user guides to assist with the optimisation and improved user experience of our HR system.
  • Managing the periodic payroll regulatory filings in a timely manner, maintaining compliance with tax authorities and regulatory boards.
  • Managing payroll processes for our employee benefit schemes (pensions, flexible benefits, car leases), ensuring timely enrolment and cost reconciliation within our business.
About you
  • Significant previous experience in global payroll processing with an international business;
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel. You will be able to perform complicated calculations, use VLOOKUPs, create PivotTables, and other similar functionalities;
  • Intermediate skills in PowerBI. For example, you may have previously created dashboards with custom visuals to visualise complex datasets;
  • Previous experience with cloud-based software payroll providers, such as ADP;
  • Excellent working knowledge of HR relational databases. For example, SelectHR or Oracle E-Business;
  • Experience of implementing and delivering end-to-end payroll transition projects to new providers;
  • An ability to work across a multidisciplinary team and establish relationships with internal stakeholders at all levels in our business;
  • Experience of working to a legislative framework and within agreed timescales;
  • Good working knowledge of wider finance processes and accounting policies that impact payroll processing;
  • Capable of handling different tasks, responsibilities and tight schedules;
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities; and
  • A flexible and professional approach to adapt to changing needs and priorities.
