The Role

As an Associate Geotechnical Engineer, you will take responsibility for the technical and commercial development of the geotechnical design capability.

The position combines hands-on geotechnical design, project leadership, client relationship management and business development, alongside the opportunity to recruit, mentor and develop a growing team.

You will work closely with senior management and other engineering disciplines, helping to establish a strong geotechnical presence in Manchester.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver geotechnical design projects across infrastructure and construction sectors.
  • Provide technical expertise in foundation design, slope stability, earthworks, retaining structures and ground improvement.
  • Review and approve geotechnical interpretative reports, factual reports and technical design deliverables.
  • Manage ground investigation subcontractors, including specification, procurement, supervision and quality control.
  • Oversee ground investigation programmes, ensuring delivery within agreed budgets and timescales.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Identify new business opportunities and contribute to tenders, bids and fee proposals.
  • Support the growth of the Manchester geotechnical team through recruitment, mentoring and technical development.
  • Manage project budgets, resources and commercial performance.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant Eurocodes, UK standards and industry requirements.
About You

We are looking for a technically strong, commercially aware geotechnical professional who enjoys taking ownership of projects and developing client relationships.

You will ideally have experience working within a UK geotechnical design consultancy, with the confidence to lead technical delivery and contribute to the development of a growing business.

Essential Requirements
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in geotechnical design consultancy, ideally across UK infrastructure projects.
  • Strong technical knowledge of foundations, slope stability, retaining structures, earthworks and ground improvement.
  • Experience managing ground investigation subcontractors and associated investigation programmes.
  • Experience in client-facing roles, including business development or account management.

  • Knowledge of Network Rail standards and rail infrastructure projects.
Salary and Benefits
  • Competitive salary and benefits package, dependent on experience.
  • Associate-level position with genuine leadership responsibility.
  • Opportunity to establish and grow a geotechnical team.
  • Exposure to major infrastructure and multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Direct involvement in business strategy and future growth.
  • Supportive working environment with opportunities for professional development.
