Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Genetic/Genomic Counsellor to join the highly specialised Ehlers-Danlos syndromes service covering the South of England and Wales. The role involves delivering a comprehensive, equitable clinical genomic and counselling service for individuals with, or at risk of, rare, monogenic types of Ehlers-Danlos syndromes.

The post holder should have experience in genetic/genomic counselling and demonstrate an interest in the diagnosis and management of rare, monogenic conditions.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide expert genetic/genomic counselling for patients and families with rare, monogenic EDS, including in-person, virtual, and telephone consultations.
  • Accurately document family history using appropriate systems such as Phenotips.
  • Lead in predictive genetic testing, clinical appointments, and management of urgent enquiries.
  • Coordinate with laboratory colleagues for testing, specimen storage, and result interpretation.
  • Liaise with other healthcare professionals involved in managing individuals with rare EDS types.
  • Attend and contribute to MDT meetings and case presentations.
  • Act as a resource and participate in teaching healthcare professionals, students, and patient/public groups.
  • Contribute to service development and research projects.

Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
  • Essential: Master's level education with advanced knowledge in general genetics; HCPC or AHCS registration (or working towards it).
  • Desirable: Counselling skills qualification.
Knowledge and experience
  • Essential: Interest in rare diseases, experience in genetic counselling, managing a caseload.
  • Desirable: Previous Band 7 experience, teaching, experience in heritable connective tissue disorders.
Skills, abilities, and attributes
  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively, work autonomously, manage caseloads, and work within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Desirable: Experience in education, research, and publications.
