Job summary

Job overview

We seek a Genetic/Genomic Counsellor for the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes service covering the South of England and Wales, providing comprehensive clinical genomic and counselling services for individuals with or at risk of rare, monogenic EDS.

The candidate should have genetic/genomic counselling experience and an interest in rare, monogenic conditions.

Responsibilities include pre- and post-clinic consultations, MDT participation, joint clinics, on-call duties, ongoing knowledge update, and research contribution. UK registration or working towards it is required.

Main duties
Key responsibilities
  • Provide expert counselling for patients and families with rare, monogenic EDS, via in-person, virtual, and phone consultations.
  • Document family history accurately using systems like Phenotips.
  • Lead in predictive testing, clinical appointments, and managing urgent enquiries.
  • Coordinate with laboratories for testing, interpret results, and confirm phenotypic data.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals involved in EDS management.
  • Attend and contribute to MDT meetings and case presentations.
  • Serve as a resource and educate healthcare professionals, students, and the public.
  • Contribute to service development and research projects.

Person specification
Qualifications
  • Master’s Level education with advanced knowledge in general genetics.
  • Genetic counsellor registration with HCPC or AHCS (or working towards it).
Knowledge & Experience
  • Interest and expertise in rare diseases, demonstrated through clinical work or research.
  • Experience in genetic counselling, managing caseloads, and teaching.
  • Experience with heritable connective tissue disorders.
Skills & Attributes
  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively.
  • Work autonomously and manage caseloads.
  • Adhere to professional ethics and scope of practice.
  • Work under pressure, use IT tools, review literature, and work in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent communication.
  • Experience in education, research, and publication is desirable.
