Job description

Generator Service Engineer

Salary: £45k plus overtime paid at time and a half

Hours: Monday to Friday – call out rota (paid)

Location: Colchester, Essex and surrounding areas, including central London

Contract: Permanent

Must be able to drive as you also get a works van.

About This Opportunity

When the power goes down, someone has to get it back up – and that someone could be you.

Our client is a specialist power generation business that customers across the UK depend on for standby and emergency power. They are looking for an experienced Generator Service Engineer to join their field-based team, where no two days look the same, one day planned maintenance, the next a call-out to a site where the generator won’t start.

You’ll be hands-on across both the mechanical and electrical sides of diesel generator and standby power systems, with the chance to work on more complex kit including bespoke control panels and multi-set synchronisation. Backed by an engineering team with over 75 years of combined experience and ECA accreditation, you’ll be involved across the full lifecycle of generator systems, from installation and commissioning through to servicing and repair.

The role is also for those who are really looking for progression down the line and a chance to run your own team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned and preventative maintenance on diesel generators and standby power systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults and carry out effective repairs.
  • Attend breakdowns and emergency call-outs, and participate in emergency call-out arrangements as required.
  • Service and maintain generator control systems, inspecting control panels for wear, damage and potential faults.
  • Carry out mains-failure testing and operational checks.
  • Assist with load-bank testing and generator testing.
  • Carry out repairs, upgrades and replacement of components.
  • Work with generator fuel, exhaust and cooling systems.
  • Work with generator control equipment including AMF/ATS systems, switchgear and associated control systems.
  • Support generator commissioning and installation work where required.
  • Complete service reports and relevant technical documentation accurately.
  • Liaise professionally with customers while attending their sites.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and to the required quality standards.
About You
Essential
  • Previous generator service or maintenance experience, ideally within diesel generators, standby power or power generation equipment.
  • Strong mechanical engineering knowledge, including experience with diesel engines and associated components.
  • Good electrical fault-finding capabilities, with an understanding of generator controls and electrical systems.
  • The ability to diagnose faults methodically and efficiently.
  • The ability to read technical drawings and electrical information.
  • Good customer-facing and communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently while travelling between customer sites.
  • A full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • Experience with generator control panels, AMF/ATS systems, switchgear and changeover systems.
  • Experience of generator testing and load banks.
  • Experience with fuel, exhaust and cooling systems.
  • Generator installation or commissioning experience.

  • Relevant electrical, mechanical, diesel engineering or power generation qualifications.
What’s on Offer
  • Salary of £45k, plus overtime paid at time and a half.
  • Permanent position working Monday to Friday.
  • A varied, field-based role covering a range of customer sites and standby power systems.
  • The chance to work with a specialist business across the full lifecycle of generator systems, including more complex bespoke control and synchronisation systems.
  • A straightforward interview process: one Teams call and one in-person interview to meet the team and see the site.
