Job summary

Shipley Golf Club in Beckfoot Lane, Bingley, is seeking a General Manager to lead a diverse management team across Office Administration, Greenkeeping, Bar & Catering, and Golf Operations. You will work with the Board to strengthen commercial performance, enhance social value, and ensure an outstanding member and guest experience on and off the course.

Founded in 1896 in the town of Shipley, just a few miles from Bingley, the Club has a proud history spanning well over a century. In 1921, it relocated to its current home in Bingley, where members continue to enjoy an outstanding 18-hole course designed by the renowned golf course architect Alistair McKenzie. The course is widely recognised as Shipley Beckfoot.

• Salary £50,000 pa.

Position Overview:

As General Manager, you will provide leadership across a diverse management team spanning Office Administration, Greenkeeping, Bar & Catering, and Golf Operations, creating a culture built on excellence, collaboration, and member service. Working closely with the Board and wider team, you will play a pivotal role in strengthening the Club’s commercial performance, enhancing its social value, and ensuring the Club continues to deliver an outstanding experience for members, guests, and the wider community.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operational oversight, lead all clubhouse and course operations, ensuring facilities and grounds are maintained to the highest standards through proactive and reactive maintenance.
• Support Heads of Department to deliver excellence in performance, service, and accountability.
• Manage suppliers, contracts, and facilities to ensure quality, compliance, value, and property standards are maintained.
• Deliver successful Club events and enhance member activities and experiences.
• Work closely with the Board to achieve the Club’s vision, strategy, and objectives.
• Drive membership growth through effective recruitment, retention, and engagement strategies.
• Promote open communication and create a positive, motivated, and engaged team culture.
• Build strong member relationships and foster a sense of community within the Club.

The Ideal Candidate:

We are seeking a forward-thinking, commercially minded manager who can drive membership growth, attract new members, and appreciate the value of retention strategies. With experience of operating within an SME environment, you will be comfortable taking ownership of profit and loss performance and balancing commercial success with the values and traditions of the Club.

• Strong leadership skills with success managing multidisciplinary teams and working with Boards and Committees.
• A minimum of three years’ experience in hospitality or leisure management, ideally gained within a subscription-led club, golf club, or similar customer-focused environment.
• Commercially astute with a proven track record of developing and growing business.
• Based within a one-hour commute of Shipley Golf Club, or a willingness to relocate.
• You play golf with a strong understanding of the culture of club environments.
