Job summary

Encirc, Elton site, seeks a time-served General Maintenance Mechanical Chargehand to lead a multi-skilled team in a 24/7 manufacturing setting. You will drive proactive maintenance, coordinate resources and champion a Fix 4 Life approach to reduce downtime.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years in industrial engineering, relevant mechanical qualifications, and experience with CMMS/PRISMA. Strong planning, leadership and safety focus are essential.

General Maintenance Mechanical Chargehand | Permanent | £50,000 - £53,000 | Elton | Monday -Thursday 08:00 - 17:00 Friday 08:00 - 15:15 (39.5 hours)

We’re looking for an experienced General Maintenance Mechanical Chargehand to join our Elton Glass engineering team and play a key role in keeping our 24/7 manufacturing operation running safely, reliably and efficiently.

This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll be the link between our engineering team and management. You’ll coordinate engineering resources, support the team with complex maintenance issues and drive a ‘Fix 4 Life’ approach to improve equipment reliability and reduce downtime.

What you’ll be doing

• Lead, support and coach a team of mechanical and multi-skilled engineers.
• Coordinate planned and reactive maintenance activities across the site.
• Prioritise engineering resources to minimise equipment downtime and maximise plant availability.
• Drive a ‘Fix 4 Life’ approach, challenging temporary solutions and identifying the true root cause of equipment issues.
• Use problem‑solving and continuous improvement techniques such as RCA and Kaizen to improve reliability.
• Provide technical support and practical problem‑solving during breakdowns and maintenance activities.
• Ensure maintenance work is carried out safely and in line with company procedures, including LOTO, Permit to Work and safe isolation.
• Work closely with Production, Engineering and other site teams to ensure maintenance priorities are aligned with operational needs.
• Support the planning and delivery of the engineering works backlog and planned maintenance schedule.
• Maintain accurate engineering records through our CMMS and use data to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Ensure high standards of housekeeping, workshop organisation and engineering standards are maintained.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for a time‑served mechanical engineer who combines strong technical knowledge with the confidence to lead and support others.

You’ll Ideally Have

• 5+ years' experience in a manufacturing or industrial engineering environment.
• A Level 3, ONC or City & Guilds mechanical engineering qualification.
• Strong mechanical maintenance experience.
• MIG and ARC welding experience.
• Previous experience leading, coaching or mentoring an engineering team.
• Excellent planning, coordination and problem‑solving skills.
• The ability to work independently and make confident decisions in a fast‑paced environment.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues across Engineering and Production.
• Experience using a CMMS; PRISMA experience would be advantageous.

It Would Be Great If You Also Have

• Electrical engineering knowledge.
• Experience with SAP.
• Knowledge of continuous improvement techniques including Kaizen, RCA or 8D.
