Job summary

Nelson and Colne College Group is seeking a Casual Functional Skills Tutor to deliver English to apprentices from Level 1 to Level 2. You will teach primarily at college sites and online, with some delivery at employer premises as required.

You will schedule around eight to ten hours of classes weekly, and the remainder will focus on planning, marking, progress reviews, and learner records. A teaching qualification and experience in Functional Skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Proven ability to deliver Functional Skills English from Level 1 to Level 2.
  • Experience in teaching and assessing Functional Skills English or equivalent.
  • Qualified teacher status or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or Level 2 Functional Skills or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills English lessons to apprentices.
  • Utilise initial assessments to identify starting points and gaps.
  • Assess progress and provide timely feedback to learners.
  • Deliver speaking, listening and communication activities as needed.
  • Conduct regular progress reviews and maintain accurate learner records.
  • Plan, deliver and assess learning activities and adjust plans as required.
  • Work with coaches and employers to support learner progression.
  • Adhere to safeguarding, health and safety and awarding body requirements.

The Exciting Role

A new opportunity has become available for a Casual Functional Skills Tutor to deliver English to apprentices from Level 1 up to Level 2.

You will join East Lancashire Apprenticeships and play an important role in helping apprentices develop the English skills they need to progress and achieve. You will deliver approximately eight -ten hours of classes each week, with the remaining time supporting high-quality planning, individualisation, marking, assessment, progress reviews, target-setting and accurate learner records.

Delivery will take place primarily at college sites and online, through group, small-group and one-to-one sessions. Occasional delivery or learner support at an employer premises or another College location may be required.

We are looking for an effective and enthusiastic English practitioner who can use apprentices' starting points to plan purposeful learning, provide constructive feedback and intervene promptly where progress is at risk. The ability to deliver Functional Skills mathematics would be a strong advantage and may provide opportunities to support maths delivery when required.

The post will provide up to 15 hours per week, normally worked across three days. As a casual role, the precise pattern and number of hours offered may be adjusted in response to learner numbers, timetabling and assessment requirements.

What You Will Be Doing:
  • Plan and deliver engaging and individualised Functional Skills English from Level 1 up to Level 2.
  • Use initial and diagnostic assessment information to establish starting points, identify gaps and agree clear learning targets.
  • Assess learning throughout the programme, mark work and provide timely, constructive feedback that helps apprentices improve.
  • Plan, deliver and assess speaking, listening and communicating activities where required.
  • Conduct regular learner progress reviews, update targets and take prompt action where progress, attendance or engagement is a concern.
  • Use OneFile to maintain accurate and timely records of teaching, assessment, feedback, reviews, targets and learner progress.
  • Identify additional learning support needs, make appropriate referrals and adjustments, and liaise with relevant teams regarding examination access arrangements.
  • Work closely with coaches, Programme Leaders, employers and College support teams to help apprentices achieve successfully and on time.
  • Participate in standardisation and quality assurance activity and work in line with safeguarding, health and safety, College and awarding organisation requirements.
What We Are Looking For:
  • Subject knowledge and competence to deliver Functional Skills English from Level 1 up to Level 2.
  • Successful experience of teaching and assessing Functional Skills English or an equivalent English curriculum.
  • A recognised teaching qualification.
  • English and mathematics at GCSE Grade C/4, Level 2 Functional Skills or equivalent.
  • The ability to plan individualised learning, assess progress, provide constructive feedback and set meaningful targets.
  • An organised and accurate approach to planning, marking, progress reviews and electronic learner records.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to motivate apprentices of different ages and starting points.
  • An understanding of additional learning support, reasonable adjustments and examination access arrangements.
  • The ability to deliver Functional Skills mathematics up to and including Level 2 is desirable, as is experience of OneFile and apprenticeship provision.
