Job summary

Academics seeks a Functional Skills Tutor for a unique Further Education College in Hurn, England. The role involves teaching Maths and English to young adults aged 16-25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) using a focus on equine therapy. You will plan and deliver lessons, working collaboratively to support students in achieving their academic goals while enhancing their independence through horse-related activities.

Responsibilities include personalized lesson planning, collaborative work within a multi-disciplinary team, and contributing to EHC plan reviews. Ideal candidates should have a teaching qualification and experience with SEND.

Qualifications

• Level 5 teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards) and evidence of teaching experience.
• Ability to teach Functional skills to a minimum of Entry Level 3.
• Excellent teaching and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Effective skills in planning, preparation, recording and reviewing students' progress.
• Ability to engage students in positive enabling relationships.
• Willingness to work as part of a team.
• Experience of working with young people with SEND.
• Experience with horses.

Functional Skills Tutor - Maths and English
Further Education College - SEND - Christchurch, Dorset
£20 - £25 per hour | 32.5 hours per week | 40 weeks per year

Academics have a rare and exciting opportunity for a Functional Skills Tutor to join a specialist Further Education College for young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in Christchurch, Dorset, starting in September 2026.

This is a unique setting combining education with horse riding therapy. Students follow an individualised curriculum, learning independent living skills, social and communication skills, Maths, English, ICT, skills for work and, when relevant, achieve accredited qualifications.

You will be required to plan and deliver high-quality English and Maths lessons to small groups of pupils aged 16-25 with a range of SEND, using the College's unique equine specialism. The focus revolves around working with horses to prepare young people for adulthood by increasing their independence and employment options, while achieving academic and vocational qualifications and knowledge that will equip them for the next stage in their lives, whether further education, training, or work.

The College is set within the New Forest and is surrounded by stunning scenery. The College has 28 resident horses that provide a focus for learning and help to embed transferable skills. Due to this, you must have a passion/interest in horses, or be comfortable working in a setting with horses.
