Job summary

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking a Functional Skills English Tutor for a new Alternative Provision in Towcester, starting October 2026. The role is Temp-to-Perm, delivering engaging English sessions and guiding learners to achieve Functional Skills qualifications.

You will adapt lessons to diverse abilities, support students with SEN/SEMH, and contribute to a developing provision with strong professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

• Experience teaching Functional Skills English or GCSE English.
• A recognised teaching qualification is desirable, though relevant experience will be considered.
• Experience working with pupils with SEN, SEMH, behavioural needs or barriers to learning.
• Creative, patient and adaptable approach to teaching.

Responsibilities

• Deliver engaging and accessible English sessions to students.
• Support students to develop reading, writing, speaking and communication skills toward Functional Skills qualifications.
• Adapt teaching to different abilities and learning needs while maintaining a positive classroom environment.
• Work with students who may have SEN, SEMH, challenging behaviour or gaps in education.

Functional Skills English Tutor - New Alternative Provision

Location: Towcester, Northamptonshire

Start Date: October 2026

Contract: Temp-to-Perm

Are you a passionate English teacher or Functional Skills Tutor looking for a rewarding opportunity where you can help young people rebuild their confidence and achieve meaningful qualifications? A new Alternative Provision setting in Towcester is opening in October 2026, and they are looking for an experienced Functional Skills English Tutor to join their growing team. The organisation already operates two established sites and is now expanding into Towcester. This is an excellent opportunity to join the provision at an exciting stage of its development and help shape the educational experience for students at the new setting.

The Role

• Deliver engaging and accessible English sessions to students who may have struggled within mainstream education.
• Support students to develop their reading, writing, speaking and communication skills, working towards appropriate Functional Skills qualifications.
• Adapt teaching to different abilities and learning needs, while creating a positive and supportive classroom environment.
• Work with students who have SEN, SEMH, challenging behaviour or significant gaps in education (highly desirable).

What We're Looking For

• Experience teaching Functional Skills English, GCSE English or a similar English curriculum.
• A recognised teaching qualification is desirable, although relevant experience will also be considered.
• Experience working with young people with SEN, SEMH, behavioural needs or barriers to learning.
• A creative, patient and adaptable approach to teaching.
• The ability to build strong relationships and re-engage students who may have had negative experiences of education.
